I have an '09 iMac running 10.6.8. The mail program (version 4.6) starts when I turn the machine on; how do I change this so that it won't load, but instead the regular screen appears without it?

Thanks, Joe

Check in your dock. Right click or ctrl-click on the mail icon, choose options and check if the option Open at Login is enabled. Disable it and try if works.

Second, System Settings -> Users & Groups, choose your Account and on the right side click on the button Login Items. If Mail there, remove it by select it and click on the minus (-) button.

Thanks Dante. Your first recommendation worked.
