Hello,

My computer is custom made from Ironside Computers.  It is a windows 7 Professional (one user) SP! System 64 bits.  It has  one terabyte hard drive and 8 gigabytes of memory.  It is about 1 year old.

My original all in one printer was a HP4500 all-in one.  Recently, it began giving me problems.  For some reason, it would change from the default printer at random. For example, it would change to Windows XPs Document Writer and I would reset it.  A day or two later it would change to One Note.  I tried to reinstall the software to no avail.  HP support services were unable to help.  They suggested I reinstall the operating system, Windows Office, etc.  A hint in a post I found online  about a similar problem led me to look into the registry at HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion @Device, The XPS Document Printer was listed.  I finally deleted all the software

Since the HP printer was 5 years old I purchased a  Epson Workforce WF-3640.  I tried to install it but every attempt failed.  Some failures included "unable to complete installation", "unable to install drivers".  Interestingly enough,  after the last attempt to install the Epson Printer I went to the above registry key and the XPS Document Writer was listed as the default printer.  The setupap1.dev.log (attached) from my last attempt with Epson Software also showed the XPS Document Writer as being installed.

Epson suggested I reinstall as administrator making sure the antivirus and firewall were turned off.  I knew turning the antivirus and firewall off.  Even though I log on as administrator I right-clicked on the installer an "ran as administrator" anyway.  The next suggestion was a permissions problem "somewhere" in the system.   I never had a permission problem in the 15 or so years of home computing plus I didn't know where to look.  I sent them an e-mail with the setupap.dev.log log and related the error number to them . Their response was that it was a "system Issue" and that I should run chkdsk and defrag my system.

I did a defrag about a week ago using Perfect Disc by Raxco but I did it again anyway.  There was very little defragmentation.  I was going to attach my chkdsk log from 11/11/2015 (before Epson suggested) and my sfc scannow log from yesterday but you may want different or new logs or may not want to get involved with this mess at all.

Sorry to be so long winded but I wanted to give you as much blow by blow information as possible

Thanks for your time

Hi hamulis,

Thank you for your prompt reply.  One new development; I decided to back up my files in case this problem  is unsolvable and I had  to do a total reinstall. The system wouldn't load the drivers from my thumb drive(s).

The MiniToolBox log is below. The Speccy address is at the bottom of the log.

I sse no errors pointing to problems with a printer.

Registrar Registry Manager

If you have been using the above program, IMO...it's highly likely that you have damaged the registry...which may account for your inability to install a printer.

I see that you tried to run FRST, which is a malware tool.  Malware could also account for a damaged registry and other problems...your reflected Event Viewer errors could also be interpreted as supporting any of the hypotheses above.

I don't see anything pointing to a hard drive problem, but that's always a possibility that should be checked out, IMO.

Date: 2015-11-19 16:38:30.171
Description: Code Integrity is unable to verify the image integrity of the file \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\MBWrp64.dll because the set of per-page image hashes could not be found on the system.

The above error makes no sense...no creative audio card/chip is installed...no apparent (to me) reason that Creative anything...should be trying to install itself on this system.

Hello Again

I use Registrar Registry Manager for registry searches.  It seems darn effective for that.

In fact I used it to search Creative an did find 75-100 Keys, data and values that are related to Creative Nomad and Jukebox.  I didn't even know what those were until I looked them up online today.

It appears at one point they created proprietary software integrated into Windows Explorer.  If what I found online is correct it was installed with Windows 7 SP1.  Red Chair Software may also have some relationship

with Apple Ipods but I get lost there.  I don't know if they are even in business anymore.

I no longer able to use usb thumb drives.  That happened yesterday. The last six entries on the Registrar Registry Manager are USB#VID-041E&PID-1002 ( 2 instances)

                                                                                                                                                                                                           USB#VID-041E&PID-4004 (2 instances )

                                                                                                                                                                                                            USB#VID-0471&PID-0222 (2 instances)

All what I've written in this post is probably irrelevant.  However, do you think the Creative Technologies Entries have ant significance?

Would a total reinstall be the only solution?

Thanks

Hi hamluis,,

Just to add something that I think is funny.

I mentioned above that my USB thumb drives were not being detected.

Well I tried a different thumb drive  the message that popped up was "Installing driver software for Microsoft 5 -button mouse with Intellieye"

I just think its funny>  I'm going to move the mouse to a different USB port just for fun.

I'm not sure what you have done in the registry...but the Creative entries in the registry...not the errors noted via Event Viewer...are probably part of the original Win 7 install.  Windows loads a lot of drivers for items which MAY be commonly installed in a system...so I would not worry about the Creative drivers that you may find.

But the driver errors I see in Event Viewer...would have no meaning if you have no Creative program or device installed...there should not be errors generated by dormant, unus3ed drivers...not code integrity errors.

I can't add anything that I haven't already stated.

Louis
