I know this much: something has infected my computer. It has reached the point where it is so slow, everything from Open Office to Chrome crashes without being even the slightest bit usable, and I am about ready to chunk my computer against the wall.

I have done scans with about everything I can think of, including Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and AVG, and alas, all clean. Somehow iTunes is also completely screwed up, but for all I know that could be a completely unrelated issue.

What prompted me to post here was this little guy popping up on my screen. I'm clueless as to what driver is trying to download, because I sure as hell didn't attempt to download or update anything.

Help...please?

I am on a Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 7.

Hi caccigirl! :welcome: to the BC AII forum. My name is loki and I will be assisting you. Please follow the steps below so I can get a better understanding of what is going on. If you don't understand any of my instructions please don't hesitate to let me know by replying to this thread. Also the driver error seems to be generated from a software program called Sema http://sema-soft.com/en/start.php <- Are you familiar with this software? Did you install it?

Step 1:

3Al62Pm.pngMiniToolBox

  • Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    • Flush DNS
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • Report FF Proxy Settings
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings
    • List content of Hosts
    • List IP configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run. Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Once the scan is complete please copy and paste the log in your next reply!

Hi, Loki. I'm Cassidy, please feel more than welcome to call me so. And before we begin, I do want to thank you so much in advance for your help and patience.

I do not recognize the website or the name of the software, and am pretty positive I did not choose to install it at any point, and no one else has access to my computer.

Here is my MiniToolBox log:

Hi Cassidy, thanks for those logs. First a few programs that probably can be uninstalled:

  • Adobe AIR - vulnerable - used for developing desktop/mobile apps
  • Bonjour - not needed unless you use an apple printer or other networked apple devices (Apple TV etc.) that share items with iTunes on you PC
  • HijackThis - outdated and no longer used for malware removal
  • Java 7 - outdated/vulnerable
  • Java 6 - outdated/vulnerable
  • JavaFX - vulnerable - used for developing desktop/mobile apps.
  • Safari - No longer supported on Windows.

If you have any questions on how to uninstall a program please let me know. Please run these tools in the steps below while I construct a plan to help with the bad driver.

Step 1:

zcMPezJ.pngAdwCleaner
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait a bit.
  • Click on I agree button.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Logfile button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Step 2:

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post Copy and Paste the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Also what is your issue with iTunes if I may ask?

Hi again Cassidy! We are going to try and remove that bad driver. Please follow the steps below in order. If you cannot create a system restore point (Step 1) please do not continue with Step 2. Reply to this thread and let me know.

Step 1:

We need to create a restore point:

  • Open System by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
  • In the left pane, click System protection. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Click the System Protection tab, and then click Create...
  • In the System Protection dialog box, type a description, and then click Create.

Step 2:

We need to run a command:

  • Press the windows key Windows_Logo_key.gif
  • In the 10-16-2011%204-33-46%20PM.png box, enter cmd
  • Underneath "Programs (1)" right click "cmd" and choose 10-16-2011%204-40-48%20PM.png.
  • Please Copy and Paste from the code box below into the command window:
sc stop semav6msr64
sc delete semav6msr64
sc query semav6msr64 >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\search.txt"
search.txt

  • Please copy and paste the contents of the search.txt file in your next reply.

Were you able to delete the driver? How is your computer running?

The issue with iTunes seems to have been resolved...it took me uninstalling and reinstalling about 5 times prior to your original response to this thread, but either way, it now seems to work fine.

I will proceed to follow your instructions for creating a restore point and uninstalling the bad driver.

Here are the contents of Search.txt

You asked if I was able to remove the driver. I followed your instructions point by point - creating the restore point, opening the command window, copying and pasting what you provided. I am now copying and pasting the contents of Search.txt. If that's all that I needed to do to uninstall the driver, I guess I did? If you wouldn't mind reading back over the instructions you gave me, I'd appreciate it, because I can't help but feel like that was far too easy and quick. All I did was copy and paste something in the command window?

Anyhow, here's Search.txt:

SERVICE_NAME: semav6msr64
        TYPE               : 1  KERNEL_DRIVER
        STATE              : 3  STOP_PENDING
                                (STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE    : 0  (0x0)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE  : 0  (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT         : 0x0
        WAIT_HINT          : 0x0

Hi Cassidy, it looks like the driver didn't delete. That's my fault, I need to give it time to stop. If you could, before you start with Step 1, delete the search.txt from your desktop and then please follow the corrected steps below again. The command will pause for 15 seconds to give the driver time to stop:

  • Please Copy and Paste from the code box below into the command window:
sc stop semav6msr64
timeout 15
sc delete semav6msr64
sc query semav6msr64 >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\search.txt"
search.txt
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the search.txt file in your next reply.

Step 3:

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait a bit.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin to scan your computer like it did before.
  • After the scan has finished...
  • This time click on the Cleaning button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[C#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

Step 4:

cvMlKv6.pngESET Online Scanner

  • Click here to download the installer for ESET Online Scanner and save it to your Desktop.
  • Disable all your antivirus and antimalware software - see how to do that here.
  • Right click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Place a checkmark in YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start. Wait for ESET Online Scanner to load its components.
  • Select Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Click Advanced Settings, then place a checkmark in the following:
    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Click Start to begin scanning.
  • ESET Online Scanner will start downloading signatures and scan. Please be patient, as this scan can take quite some time.
  • When the scan is done, click List threats (only available if ESET Online Scanner found something).
  • Click Export, then save the file to your desktop and copy and paste the results in your next reply.
  • Click Back, then Finish to exit ESET Online Scanner.

I would like to see the results of the search.txt and your ESET scan in your next reply. I will walk you through the uninstall after we finish with the scans. Also, how is your computer running? Thanks,

loki

Hello,

I followed your instructions to the letter on deleting the driver, and it seems to have gone smoothly, I think, except that no Search.txt was produced?

I will be posting my AdwCleaner logfile and ESET logfile shortly.

I cannot seem to get ESET to run. Here's where I'm getting stuck:

Hi Cassidy, what browser are you using when you try and run ESET? Have you ever been able to run it before? I see the scanner was installed before I had asked you to run it so that is why I ask. Lets remove some of those programs and see what happens when we try and run it again. Please repy with any questions you have if you do not understand any of the steps below:

Step 1:

We need to remove programs using "Programs and Features"

Click the "Start" orb on the taskbar, and then click the "Control Panel" button.

  • If you use Category mode, click on Uninstall a Program.
  • If you use Icons mode, click on Program and Features.

A list of programs installed will be "populated" (this may take a bit of time).
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the below entries and selecting "Remove":

  • Adobe AIR
  • Bonjour
  • ESET Online Scanner v3
  • HijackThis
  • Java 7
  • Java 6
  • JavaFX
  • Safari

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.

Step 2:

3DPGbxe.pngTemp File Cleaner (TFC)

  • Please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC) and move it to your Desktop
  • Right-click on TFC.exe and select Spcusrh.pngRun as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Click on Start to launch the cleanup process and wait until it completes
  • TFC may close running applications, make your screen disappear temporarily, or require a reboot of your PC - this is normal and part of the cleanup
  • Please restart your computer
  • There will be no log generated by this tool

Step 3:

cvMlKv6.pngESET Online Scanner

  • Click Export, then save the file to your desktop.
  • Click Back, then Finish to exit ESET Online Scanner.

Were you able to remove the programs? Did TFC run properly? Any luck with ESET? Thanks,

loki

I've definitely been able to run ESET before, I've never had any issues with it. It has definitely been quite a while since I've run it though.

I have uninstalled everything except for Java 7, which I have a question about. I am concerned about uninstalling it because, isn't Java needed for a lot of programs and websites to work correctly? Should I be installing a new version after this uninstall?

Everything else on the list uninstalled smoothly, no issues. I will proceed after I hear back about Java.

Java 7 is outdated and vulnerable. You can download the latest version here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html

Click on the "Accept License Agreement" radio button and towards the middle of the page download the Windows X64 version by clicking the file named: jre-8u65-windows-x64.exe

Please make sure you uncheck the box that sets Yahoo as your default search engine for Internet Explorer when you install the new version of Java. I would also allow Java to update automatically.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
