This all started when I tried downloading a program from a questionable site. If I were to leave my computer running all night there is six or seven pop-ups about how my computer is infected and what I need to buy to get rid of it, or there is pop-ups offering for me to get laid tonight. There are also a few casino pop-ups trying to get me to gamble. These just come up randomly when I am using the computer. There is also a flashing yellow triangle in the system tray, which if i right or left click it does the same thing, goes to a site called thespygaurd.com, to try to get me to purchase an anti-spyware program. The triangle also makes a pretty annoying little popping sound about once a minute. My homepage in Internet Explorer was changed from Google to sysprotectionpage.net and a pop-up comes up that says I have a virus, W32.Myzor.FK@yf, and I should click okay to download software to uninstall it. One more thing, I have installed and ran numerous programs to try and get rid of this. I had a different problem in which a red bubble popped up from the system tray that said I was infected, but I do not remember what the icon was. One of the many programs I used got rid of that problem. I have used Ad-Aware, Ewido, Spybot S&D, Housecall, Bit Defender, and McAfee Stinger. I hope this is enough information, and I really would appreciate any help you could give me on this matter. Thank you very much in advance.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present). We’ll get them next step.
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new hijack log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

I printed out all of the instructions and restarted my computer. I got into safe mode but all it was was a black screen with the four safe mode signs and the XP version at the top. I pressed alt+control+delete and nothing was running. I pressed "new task..." in that window and ran SmitfraudFix, then I pressed "2" to delete the infected files. It started doing what it was supposed to, but then closed out and the screen went back to the plain black screen.

All right, I could have sworn I pressed the number "2" when I did that the first time, but I tried it again and it seemed to work just fine. I saved the notepad file and I will post it here in a minute, but when I rebooted, my background was gone, which I guess happens only on uninfected computers. I haven't seen any of the symptoms since I rebooted either, so hopefully something you had me do up to this point cured this. But, usually when I need something to pop-up so I can see if it is still there, it takes a few hours for anything to appear. Here is the SmitfraudFix file. I hope this helps and I will post any news I have tomorrow about if this is gone or not. Thanks for all your help up to this point.

Hello, Sorry that I haven't been able to post, I have been out of town. Anyway, since the last post I have not seen any signs of the problem. The yellow triangle is gone in the system tray, I have not had any pop-ups on my desktop, and I can open IE with my homepage back, and no pop-ups telling me to buy something. Here is my HJT log, I hope you can tell me if I am clean. Thank you very much for all of your help.

Sorry - HiJackThis is runing from a temp directory and must be moved to run correctly

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index....=tpmod;dl=item5
Scroll down to the download section

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
=======================
You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\4396ad4f.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\PPATCH~1
D:\My Documents\?icrosoft.NET
C:\Documents and Settings\Ted\Local Settings\Application Data\4396ad4f.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

I did eveything you told me to, and the D:\My Documents\?icrosoft.NET did not work, it said that it did not exist. Then, I deleted all of the temp files, but Safe Mode was just a black screen with the four "Safe Mode"s around the outside, so I had to use Alt+Ctrl+Del to do everything and I did not know how to empty the Recycle Bin just from the Alt+Ctrl+Del menu. Everything else seemed to work just fine though.

Awesome! Thank you for all of your help, I don't think I would have ever figured out how to get rid of that if it weren't for you guys. Thanks again, and you guys do great work.
