Mr speakers,

Since the built in speakers are working and the job of the jack plug on the external speakers is to disable them and use the output, the problem appears to be mechanical.

Can you try a set of headphones/earphones to see what result you get with them.

Unfortunately the only headset I have is USB plug in, is there any other way I can test it?

Mr speakers,

I can't think of one off the top of my head,

Any 3.5 jack plug will do for testing purposes (phone ear buds)

we just need to find out whether or not the laptop socket is working,  before we move on to other things

when you say "Recognised in the tray" could explain or expand on that some more

Edit  for extra question

Right I will see what I can do, it just seems strange to me that within the space of 10 minutes the socket would go from working to not working.

Mr speakers,

you could try your speakers in another source (phone tv any thing with a headphone earphone socket) that would rule them out

I didn't haha, head phones work and my speakers work on the TV but not on my computer, this must be a driver issue.
