How do i uninstall Microsoft Edge and Cortana

Go to C:\Windows\SystemApps

One of the folders in SystemApps refers to Edge and another refers to Cortana.

Read carefully the folder names and there will be no doubt.

Take ownership of the folders and grant yourselves full control
I will show you this for one folder
Elevated CMD prompt
>takeown /f C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
Enter
>icacls C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe /grant administrators:f
Enter
Double-click the folder (open it) to see all the files
What we are looking for are Applications NOT Apllication Extensions
Inside the Edge folder you will find two applications that make Edge work.
MicrosoftEdge.exe and MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe
If you want to you have the full permission to delete these. But, JIC you want to use them afterwards . . .
Rename those files as .old (instead of the .exe) If you want to go back simply rename them back to .exe

Do the same procedure with the Cortana folderGo to C:\Windows\SystemApps

One of the folders in SystemApps refers to Edge and another refers to Cortana.

This is a quote of my own answer to a post in ten forums (user name "ernesto")

I used this method successfully. It can also be used to delete "undeletable" files or folders protected by system when Security tab in Properties is unable to change permissions. I have also used this in those cases successfully.

I would like to know if all this has some side effects which could disturb the normal working of my PC.

It's never a good idea to rename and/or delete system files, as you'll just cause corruption in the system file architecture and that can prevent Windows Updates and other system features from working properly. I guess that SFC and DISM will return corruptions now.

Like Aura said, you are better off with having them on the system rather than removing them. Cortana is used in searching the files so I wouldn't mess with it.

Also, why are you removing them?

Mind posting the CBS.log so we can see what was repaired?

I don't use them. But that is not the main reason. Even though I don't use them, Edge creates a significant number of temporary files which increase the time it takes to scan for virus or malware or, especially, cleaning. I use CCleaner daily and the time it takes to run it is at least 10 times longer than when I ran it in Win7. The majority of the files it scans. and freezes on each one of them are Edge temporary files. I am trying to fix that.

You see, I don't use Xbox or OneDrive either, but they don't bother me at all.

The sfcdetails.txt is useless to me. If I'm to check something, I need the full CBS.log :) As it is, not in a PDF.

There are major upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Lots of mechanisms changed, some things removed, some added, so the time taken to clean a system is going to differ. Just my opinion :)

By the way, if you clean the Edge temporary files daily then I don't see how they are being generated daily? Are you using Edge to browse the internet? Asking because the internet settings which the system uses are carried over from Internet Explorer.

Running Windows 10.

Cortana disabled

I do not use Edge....ever.

System runs quite well...a few hiccups here and there but nothing too major atm

I open Ccleaner and click on Run Cleaner..(not on analyze)

33.385 seconds...including the time taken to close both Thunderbird and Firefox. This is quite comparable to the time taken to run CC in Win 7 or 8

I only use Ccleaner once per week....sometimes not that often.

You have other gremlins in the works if it is taking an excessive amount of time.

It's still a .pdf, I cannot read it properly. Is it possible to upload the full CBS.log file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL here?

Condobloke

My CCleaner scans take about 400 to 500 seconds. Maybe something is wrong with the CCleaner software. This was before I made changes to SystemApps and was the reason I wanted to get rid of Edge.

A Malwarebytes custom scan of drive C: takes one hour vs less than 30 minutes in my prior Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

As for Gremlins; Bitdefender, Malwarebytes Premium, RKill, RogueKiller and  adwCleaner have shown no gremlins.

When you play with system files manually, you end up creating corruption like this.
