Apologies if I've asked this question before: generally Windows Defender shuts off by default when you install a second anti-virus/anti-malware program.  Are there any programs that can work with Defender side-by-side (Win 8.1 system)?

There is only Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as far as I know that will work alongside Windows Defender.

Technically Emsisoft Anti-Malware will also be compatible with Windows Defender, but since it is also an AV (in addition to being an AM) it will turn off Windows Defender.

You can run both Windows Defender [7, 8, etc versions] and Emsisoft Anti-Malware [even with its 3 shields on].  I've been running them for some time now.

If you are going to invest in Emsisoft Anti-Malware, IMO there is no need to leave Windows Defender turned on. See my comments in Supplementing your Anti-Virus Program with Anti-Malware Tools as to why I recommend Emsisoft Anti-Malware.

Thanks, guys, as always.  I've had good experiences with Malwarebytes in the past so I'm glad to hear it plays nicely with Defender.
