Windows Vista - PC freezing after 5 mins

Hi guys,

I have an Acer aspire x1700 machine running Vista. After I log in, OS will completely freeze, cursor and all.

Is this a hard drive issue or could it be software related. I am tempted to order a new hard drive, but was wondering had anyone seen an issue like this before?
