Is it possible/safe to format a USB flash drive using NTFS rather than FAT or FAT32?

I noticed that all of my flash drives and similar devices (MP3 player, for example) use the FAT file system by default. Going into My Computer and trying to format the drive presents only two options for file system: FAT and FAT32.

I have a small flash drive that I reformatted to NTFS to carry programs I use to help others.

This is a simple tutorial I used to do the reformat.

I am told however, a problem with formatting flash drives to use NTFS is this format also produces much more wear and tear on the flash drive and may make it wear out much faster.

I've been using this drive about seven months now on a weekly basis and have not yet experienced problems.

I don't know about changing over an MP3 player though.
The only easy day was yesterday.
