Hi all!

I am reading a lot about Graphics Cards now, in conjunction with bying myself components for a new computer build, and I am therefore wondering; How much RAM does MSI Radeon R9 390X 8G Gaming Graphics Card need?

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,

Main memory?  I don't think there's any specific requirement.  Probably the recommended minimum to run whatever operating system you are using.  It would seem a bit strange having a system with 2 Gb main memory (minimum recommendation for x64 editions of Windows), and 8 Gb video RAM, but I can't think why it wouldn't work.  As you appear to be building a system with 16 Gb RAM that would be enough for most purposes.

Hi, jonuk76!

Thank you for the prompt and assuring reply! :)

Yeah, and I suppose that is why nothing is mentioned about it in the GPU's specifications, but I thought I would ask you more experienced folks anyway to be sure.

Thank you very much for the help! :) The issue has been successfully resolved! :thumbup2:

No problem.

For what its worth, I could see having that amount of GPU memory (8Gb) causing problems on 32 bit versions of Windows, with its 4 Gb address limit.  I don't know how exactly it would work (if at all), but not an advisable combination.

FWIW/IMO:

The RAM on any physical video card these days...is dedicated RAM which is part of the card.  It is used only for graphics.  A card with dedicated RAM...does not need to "borrow" from system RAM.

The RAM in a system...is used by Windows for Windows/system functions.

If the motherboard reflects onboard video capability...and said onboard video was in use...that would be the only occasion on which the system RAM might be used for graphics functions.
