I received the a warning by Zemana that dnsapi.dll is infected.  And attempts to repair fail.

I am running Windows XP.

Running Malwarebytes and Hitman didn't find this problem (so it seems it is something only Zemana looks for or can find).

 Any suggestions?

You can submit the file to VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan that will scan the file using multiple security programs.

Post the results back here.

You can scan the computer for adware which some adware programs do infect that file to hijack browsers.

Are you experiencing any browser hijack/ search misdirects/ popup ads, etc.?

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

Hi there,

My suspicion is that you are infected with this, as Zemana also looks for patched files.

Please follow buddy215's instructions above, then do this.

EndqYRa.pngSystem File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system:
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Spcusrh.pngRun as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Let me know if there are any corrupted files that was fixed or not.
Regards,
Alex

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the quick response.

  • VirusTotal didn't find a problem with the file (based on the description of the service, maybe this isn't a surprise since the file is "normal")
  • ADWCleaner log here, nothing too interesting

If you are not experiencing any browser hijack/ search misdirects/ popup ads, etc. then I would think there is no problem at this point.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Post the two lists mentioned below using CCleaner.

Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Choose Startups. On that page you will see a list of Windows Startups and at the top tabs for each browser and Scheduled Tasks.

At the bottom right of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you to Copy and Paste the list of Windows Startups and Scheduled Tasks into your next

post. Please do that.

Hi!

I haven't seen any hijacks / strange pop-ups.  I only browse with Opera, so maybe it is less likely to be subjected to this activity?

Anyways, here are the two lists.  Thanks as always for your help.

Cheers,

Adam
