Every time I plug my Xbox 360 controller into my Windows XP computer, it fails the driver installation with the message,

cannot install this hardware because the wizard cannot find the necessary software

but I am 100% certain that Xbox 360 controllers are compatible with Windows XP. I've seen enough of Mike Stephayn's daughters use Xbox 360 controllers on Windows XP for years (2006). I did a search on the problem and came across a couple of related but unrelated results on the problem, one forum post, and a yahoo answers post but both those deal with a "play and charge pack" that requires additional software but I just have a regular Xbox 360 controller, no charge pack. just a controller on a cord to go to the machine. no batteries or anything related to both those posts. and there is no hits or anything about Xbox 360 controllers not installing past result #2, so this is not at all widespread and apparently very rare that Windows XP won't find drivers. the controller works on all other computers (Windows 7 & Windows 8.1) that I try it on. but not this computer.

It looks like there are two types of Xbox 360 controllers; standard, and Xbox 360 controller for Windows. I take it that you have the standard version.

A standard Xbox 360 wired controller can be connected to a Windows PC by way of the USB port, but drivers must be installed before the controller will work.

Windows 7 says "Xbox 360 controller for Windows" so I don't think it is standard 360

I got it now. For some reason it would not install when the Internet wasn't working. As soon as we were back up and running, it installed the driver no problem. It must have needed something from the internet. I can't imagine what
