1. There doesn't appear to be an option in BIOS to disable memory caching/shadowing. No advanced options, just Information, Main, Security, Boot and Exit. It's Phoenix SecureCore version 0.3204.

2. Also, my memory usage has been a lot higher since running ToolWiz Care tuneup program. I don't have any restore points from that period to reverse it.

Any help on how to remedy either or both of these issues would be really appreciated,

Why do you want to disable shadowing? All that does is at boot up, instead of mapping the (slow) BIOS flash RAM of adapters and the mainboard BIOS into the HMA (High Memory Area) at the top of the first 1MB of system RAM, a tiny amount of system RAM is mapped to that location and the flash RAM contents copied to it. That means any access to BIOS code is much much faster, and uses basically no resources - the entire HMA is only 384 kilobytes of memory.

The use of system "Tuneup" utilities is a recognized potential hazard for a system, and can result in either misreported "errors" being supposedly corrected without anything actually being achieved, or some harm being done to important system functions, such as the Registry. Bleeping Computer recommends avoiding the use of such utilities.

Since I don't use them at all, and have no direct knowledge of their operation, I must leave it to more experienced techs here to offer suggestions as to the best way to deal with possible problems when there is no restore available.

I thought disabling memory caching might help reduce increased memory usage after using Toolwiz. I've also had a few BSODs recently and each time I'm told to disable memory caching and shadowing.

Windows reflects install date of about 2 weeks ago...why did you reinstall and just how did you go about doing such?

Did you run the chkdsk /r command, as advised to do so in the error I highlighted above?

I see no evidence of "high memory usage" for any process, at any time.

I upgraded from Vista nearly 2 weeks ago, but the increase in memory usage started several weeks before, after I ran the ToolWiz tuneup program I mentioned earlier..

I ran CHKDSK for the C drive, 'Automatically fix file system errors', and it didn't find any problems (I don't know what Device/Harddisk/Volume4 refers to).

I see you've also highlighted Panda anti virus and Zone Alarm firewall. Were there any issues with either of these?

Regarding memory usage, for a long time it was around 25-35% when I browsed the internet, but after I ran that tunup program Toolwiz it's been consistently over 50%, and often over 60%. If this seems fine to you then fair enough. I was just concerned it had risen so much. Also, when I check what's happening in the memory with various processes, say my anti virus, it may only be using, say 20mb, but it will have another 30mb committed to it, and this is the case with most processes. Is there any way to reduce the amount of memory that is committed?

Memory...is the workplace of the system.  It's of no value unless it's used, kind of like money.  Saving it for the sake of saving it...is not a very understanding goal, IMO.  The reason that most of us have 4GB or more of RAM...is that having less than 4GB tends to impede Windows and programs from running efficiently and smoothly...it's not because having more than we need pays off in any type of dividend.  The only "dividend" from having more RAM than one needs...would be equivalent to having a car that can do 300 mph when you live in a world where the speed limit is 75 mph maximum...there is no payoff, other than the knowledge that you have a theoretical capability that you can never experience.  It's all hyperbole.  Manufacturers find such useful when trying to sell products and some users are willing to buy the spiel which they are fed.

Chrome is the browser that, IMO, will always use more RAM at a given moment...because Chrome will have processes running where other browsers won't.  The plugins...the toolbars...and whatever else that Chrome will slip in without a user necessarily being conscious of such...is a known.  See Why Chrome Uses So Much Freaking RAM .

I highlighted Panda and ZA...because each of them offers a suite that includes both firewall and AV.  If a user has more than one active AV and one active firewall engaged...it tends to slow the system and create system problems.  So...I highlight such when I review the installed programs from MTB...then I check the processes listed via the Speccy Snapshot.  I try to confirm that there is or is not a conflict.  In your case, I later found out that there doesn't appear to be a conflict, at least not one that I can recognize.

Toolwiz...is an optimizer.  In itself, that is reason enough to never even think about installing such...but there are Additional Questions raised by some.

BC does NOT support the use of any "optimizer/registry cleaner", see Registry Cleaner, Animal - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/526247/tune-up-utilities-2014-problem/?p=3303494 .

Thanks very much for all your help. I get the car analogy. It's just this big jump in memory usage after using ToolWiz. I don't know why I used it. My view is very much along the lines of BC regarding them.

Regarding my security software, I always ensure I only run one AV and firewall. Zone Alarm is indeed a complete security suite, but I've disabled the AV part and use the superior Panda. Having said that, although Action Center said Windows Firewall was off, services showed it was running. That's now disabled too.

Thanks again. If you don't think there's anything to worry about that's good enough for me.

If you are happy with how your system now runs...BC is happy too :).
