While trying to find why windows update is not working right. While checking running services in task manager I found windows update service in a stopping state, not stopped or running, stopping.

I tried to restart it but got a error message that it could not restart because an instance of it was running.

Anybody know what that means exactly. O r what I can do about it ?

Can't help you here dannyboy, but I'll be following this topic with interest.

I keep getting a message in Win10 saying 'we can't finish downloading your update'.

I tried over and over, but I just kinda given up on the whole thing. Defender says it's up to date though, so that kinda eases my mind a bit!

Im a rookie and purely recreational pc user. Im utterly obsessed with security (even though I consider myself a safe and law-abiding internet user!) and run a combo of the following freeware security suites.....

Windows Defender/firewall

Regular scans with Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner, JRT, HitmanPro

Now windows update services is no longer even listed.  It was the eighth from the bottom, now it is no where I checked the list 3 times. What the bleep is going on here.

Hello Dannyboy950!

Run SFC by:

Open Notepad

Type this:

sfc /scannow
copy %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log %UserProfile%\Desktop\CBS.log

Click on Format, and make sure Word Wrap is unchecked

Press CtrlS and click on *.txt and change it to all files

Save it on Desktop as Fix.bat

Right-click on Fix.bat, and click on Run as Administrator

Let it finish

When it finishes, attach the CBS.log on the Desktop

Hello! This happens if your connection is set as metered, or you did not plug in your laptop (although happens when I am installing that it will not install without being plugged in for obvious reasons)

I ran your batch file at about 4 am took awhile as expected when it finished it started write a message about files it found corrupted then just disappeared before I could even read what it said.  No log file produced. Will try running it again later today.  I will recheck the file I may have wrote something wrong.

Sorry for the delay

You should find CBS.log on the Desktop

Attach the CBS.log and do this:

DISM

Open Notepad

Type this:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Copy "%WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" "%UserProfile%\Desktop\DISM.log
echo Copy and Paste everything below this line after this bat file is done
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
PAUSE

Click on Format, and make sure Word Wrap is unchecked

Press Ctrl + S and click on *.txt and change it to all files

Save it on Desktop as Fix 2.bat

Now, right-click on Fix 2.bat, and click on Run as Administrator

Useful information!
You can take a break as it will take a long time. It will appear to be stuck on 20% for quite a while, but this is perfectly normal. Since you are using Windows 10, it will end up in error, but we have to wait for Microsoft to patch this, so don't worry about it.

During the fix, it will say this: Copy and Paste everything below this line after this bat file is done

Copy everything below the line, and post it into your next reply

Also, you should find DISM.log on the Desktop. Attach it into your next reply

Thank you yes they fixed it at sysnative. So far so good but it took a number of different tools and tries.
