I now have window 8 installed with all its updates, the next step, Win 8.1 can be a long drawn out process installing the updates, is it feasible to jump right to Win. 10 without installing 8.1, will Win 10 be as effective without all the Win 8.1 updates not installed? T.I.A.

Hi durkinjt :)

Since Windows 10 is a whole new OS, the fact that you don't upgrade to Windows 8.1 and install its updates doesn't matter, because they'll be replaced by Windows 10 components once it gets installed. You can try to upgrade to Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool, however since you're running Windows 8, the licence activation might fail. There's some users that upgraded to Windows 10 from 8 and the activation worked, but it's because they had Windows 8.1 installed on their system before so the licence was probably adjusted to Windows 8.1. In your case, you should upgrade to Windows 8.1, then you can skip the updates and upgrade to Windows 10 right away using the Media Creation Tool.

If the W7SP1 or W8.1 system has been activated on Microsoft's servers, W10 will activate without a product key as long as it's connected to the internet.

On the first prompt for a product key select "Skip", and on the next one select "Do it later" (wording may not be exact) - then check once you're in W10 to be sure it is activated.

I've done this 5 or 6 times at work and it's worked every time.

Just FYI - on W10 preview build 10565 and later, you'll be able to enter a W7 or W8 product key in order to install W10.

From this post:  https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2015/10/12/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-10565/

It's a little over ½ way down the page in the Device activation improvements: section
