hi.
ive downloaded something and have somehow become infected by at least toolbar888. there are probably other things that i just don't know about. the internet is noticeably slower than usual. i get frequent popups advertising fake ad removal programs. sometimes the start bar will dissapear then appear again. sometimes i will find the cursor has moved to the top left of the screen without me even touching the mouse. just now when i booted up the computer, it said my copy of windows was fake. i know it isnt.

i have followed this guide:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

and now i have a hijack this log:

Hi shuzzlewitty, welcome to BleepingComputer.
My name is Rosty and I'm going to help you with your log.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Do not run it yet.

Download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. Install Ad-Aware using the default options.
Open Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then close it out. Do NOT scan yet.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your Desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.

Please open HijackThis and click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

A FEW THINGS:

thanks a lot for this help, i really appreciate it.

-the vundo thing found nothing.

-in hijackthis, a few lines were missing from the things you said to remove.
these ones werent there:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B4C1210C-690D-4906-A038-BA4318E41BDA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhi.dll
O2 - BHO: ToolBar888 - {CBCC61FA-0221-4ccc-B409-CEE865CACA3A} - C:\Program Files\ToolBar888\MyToolBar.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkhi - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhi.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: wineak32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wineak32.dll

i hope that their absence was a good thing!

-i removed toolbar888 with add/remove programs, but tclock wasnt there.

-pmkhi was in system32, but it would not let me delete it. it said the file was in use.
toolbar888, the folder, was in program files and i deleted it.
the tclock folder wasn't there at all.
wineak32 wasnt in system 32.

-there were no addons in adaware.

- the ATF thing worked fine.

thanks alot rosty,

t. lonsdale

Hi chuzzlewitty,
thanks for the logs I asked.

in hijackthis, a few lines were missing from the things you said to remove.

No harm, thats because of vundofix did already his work.:-)

i removed toolbar888 with add/remove programs, but tclock wasnt there.

That's because of tclock doesn't have an uninstaller, but I included it just to be save.

wineak32 wasnt in system 32.

Probally it was already deleted.

Your log looks clean.
How are things running?
Please let me know.

Please visit : http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install all available critical updates , especially Service Pack 2 :

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at BleepingComputer are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

2) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. :D

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

With friendly regards,

Rosty.
