Hi, I have recently started having problems with Internet Explorer after downloading music from the net (will not be doing that again without virus checkers, lesson learnt!).

It closes after a few seconds of being online, with the usual error message (send report to Microsoft / do not send error report etc)... then I can't get on the internet again.

We've run the usual virus checkers (AVG, NTL's own brand) and haven't fixed the problem.

Does anyone know which file to look for and delete, and which programs I'll need to use to get rid of the virus? - and what it is?

Lets continue by doing a few more scans for malware.

If your running Win XP/2000, download and scan with Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0 in "SAFE MODE".
Print out the Ewido Install and Scan Instructions.

Download and scan with Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06. Setup & Configure as shown here.
Download and scan with Spybot S&D 1.4. Setup & Configure as shown here.
[DO NOT choose the option to install TeaTimer]
Note: If you encounter any error messages while downloading the updates, manually download them from here.

Since your having trouble with IE you may not be able to perform any online scans. I recommend that you download Firefox and then perform this online Virus scan:
Trend Micro Housecall Scan for Firefox

Once done with these scans try using IE again. If the problem persists then it would be best to post a hijackthis log to have a detailed look at your system. Let us know at that point and we will instruct you on how to post a log.
