Hello and good day,

I received this old gateway, running windows xp, media edition Laptop.

I hit the F11 tab and it did a factory reset, not knowing it would do a complete wipe and start new again. I have everything back on the laptop that should be on it I guess. My problem can't connect to the internet.

I have a desktop that connects fine, no problem. The laptop says that my wireless network is connected. Another connection is connected, it says 1394 connection, not sure what that is.

Does also have local area connection, network area unplugged. Don't know why.

I have comcast xfinity modem and a linksys router. Never had a problem with my wired desktop. I try to connect with the laptop, it says cannot find server, page cannot be displayed.

Can you please help me in any way.

Thank-You,

johngod

Here is a description of your 1394 connection. It is used for firewire devices and is not a true network connection.

Do you have any yellow exclamation marks next to any devices in Device Manager? If you do right click the device and select Properties. Under the Details tab select Hardware IDs in the dropdown box. Copy and post the first line for each device.

Would you have a model number of the gateway. It may be in the battery compartment. Gateway has been purchased by Acer so the support site for the computer may not exist.

So you currently have internet but the computer is slow or internet is still not functioning? Are you trying to connect wirelessly or via Ethernet?

If you cannot access internet then download Netadapter repair on another computer and copy to a flash drive. Run the program and select Advanced Repair. Select your network adapter in the dropdown box.

Before I do this, I found out another thing or two.

Than let me know if I still need to do this repair.

I checked in my Control Panel and it had all aol, and McAfee and Norton icons.

I deleted all of them. I disabled 1394 connection.

It has Internet connection, Connected--Wireless Network Connection,Connected

and Local Area Connection, Network cable unplugged with a red red X.

I click on Internet Explorer, browser version no longer supported, download Firefox 4.1.

I do it says page cannot be displayed. I go to favorites, a box on the left comes up with MSN,

I click on it, Msn comes up with my location, weather, and news.

Cannot get Yahoo, Google, Facebook or any other page, only MSN.

Other pages say, page cannot be displayed. Only MSN Internet can I get....

So it looks like you currently have internet access. Is your Media Edition at SP3? How much RAM is listed? Right click Computer and select properties. XP media edition is kind of a rare duck. It came on two install disks and troubleshooting it can be kind of hard.

Open Internet Explorer. Go to settings > About Internet Explorer. What version is IE at?

If you have internet access download Minitoolbox and check Installed Programs and last 10 Event Viewer Errors. Also Winsock entries. Post the log.

Right click your wireless adapter in Device Manager and under the Details tab select Hardware IDs in the dropdown box. Copy and post the first line.

Hold off on the Netadapter Repair for now.

You mentioned that XP said wireless was connected. I would think you would see a wireless adapter in Device Manager. Go to Control Panel > Network Connections. Do you see a wireless connection listed. Right click and select properties. It should list the WIreless Controller.

You should have more than one Network Adapters shown. Provide the Vendor and Device ID as I posted previously. You can download Minitoolbox on another computer and run it on the laptop without internet access. In Minitool Box also check IP configuration and List Devices (no driver)

Can you connect to the internet when using a Ethernet cable? Using a Ethernet cable would rule out an OS issue with internet.

For your Wireless driver, download here and install. You want ICS_Dx32.exe

Is your wireless router set to broadcast a SSID? If your router disabled SSID broadcast, then XP would not be able to detect the wireless network.

No, I disconnected the Ethernet cable that was connected to the desktop,

and connected it to the laptop but it didn't work.

It did say, where the  RED X was network cable now connected.

I think its wired for SSID, my desktop works and its also an XP.

I will try to download the link you mentioned ICS_DX32 exe

to my desktop and transfer it to my laptop.

Here is the minitool box you wanted, I figured out how to do it.

I would run the Netadapter Repair Tool first to see if that solves the problem. In the dropdown box select your Intel Pro adapter and then select Advanced Repair. Reboot.

Edit: I forgot to ask, if the Media Edition has not been updated to SP3 then download it here on another computer. Copy it to a flash drive and install it on the Gateway. You can find out if you have SP3 by right clicking computer and selecting Properties. SP3 may solve some of your internet issues. According to your log you are still at SP2. You should update to SP3 before trying anything else.

To run the  Netadapter It says first I need Net Frame work v4.0.30319.

I downloaded sp3, didn't get any where.

When I first got this pc I was able to connect to the internet,

it ran slow, very slow and had a whole bunch of stuff from the previous  owner.

I did a complete factory reset using the F11 key.

After that is when I started having trouble getting on the internet.

Install the driver I linked to and see if that solves the problem.

If after installing the driver you cannot connect then open a command prompt in an admin account and type the following commands, press enter after each.

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Reboot

I'm sorry but what driver would that be?

Would the command prompt be in the Run area?

I can do all this on my desktop with the flash drive,

than put it on my laptop?
