Hi,
I'm looking at a window 8.1 Sony PC , that has not been able to get an update for almost a year now

140 Updates available - and they fail within 30seconds with an errorcode
800700C1

Looking into this error I ran the SFC \scannow and it failed unable to repair files

I then looked that up and talked on chat to MS and was suggested to run

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

which also failed with Error: 0x800f0906

The source files could not be downloaded.

Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required t
o restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see

So i looked that up and found this article

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-corrupt-windows-image-error-0x800f0906

which I have also ran

the CMD commands

and the re-ran DISM again

which resulted in the same error

any suggestions please

I have attached the SFC /scannow log for just (SR)

and the DISM log

Edit:

Please run chkdsk /r, or chkdsk /f if you are using a SSD.

To run chkdsk /r in Windows 8/8.1 you will need to open the Elevated Command Prompt.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key windowskey_zps092d5c75.png and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.

You will see a window similar to the one below.

command%20prompt%20w8_zpsxjmewau9.png

When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste chkdsk /f in the Command Prompt, if this is a SSD you do not want to run the /r switch, you will want to use chkdsk /f then press Enter.

You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".

Type in Y and press Enter.

This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.  Do not stop this scan as this can damage your operating system.

When the scan is finished please download and run ListChkdskResult.

This will open Notepad with the results of the chkdsk scan.  Please copy and then paste this log in your topic.

That did not go well,

I get to 10% and it hangs for 1hr

so i restarted and same again

tried another reset - windows is trying to repair your PC and still hangs

So i have gone into advance settings and now trying a restore from Oct 2014 - which is the latest restore point

Infact that the last time the PC updated

So a little unhappy as its not my PC and i'm helping out a friend

i'll let you know how that all works out - maybe a factory reset will have to be done !!!!!

EDIT
The restore also failed - so trying an earlier point - which also failed

But looking on the web
its a common issue for chkdsk to stop at 10/11% and then run for hours and suddenly show 98% and complete -
Others have waited all night
so I will try that and its running now
stuck at 10% - the dots are revolving and the HDD light flashing - we wait and see until tomorrow

I ran overnight and it seems to have gone through the chkdsk /r

and now boots up OK

chkdsk log file - below

I ran a sfc /scannow and same error - log file attached

Because of the restore issues, i thought I would create a restore point

But i get the following error

Volume Shadow Service not working

- see attached Screen shot

Not sure what else to do

I have made a recovery USB from the sony vaio safe

As the windows "create recovery" just hung

I had an option to create DVDs - so perhaps I will do that and make a repair dvd - although on widows 8 - i think I can do a repair

I will have a look and see while await reply

Thanks again for all the help

I'm replying without adding quotes.

But I have the gist of the issues.

Download 8.1 media here-

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

Extract {unzip} it to a usb drive.

I downloaded the ISO file & then extracted it to a usb-

screenshot_323.jpg

Important-

screenshot_323.jpg

Download & unzip, in a new folder, this file-

Attached File  IMAGE_HEALTH.zip   1.26MB   46 downloads

Open the image health cmd as administrator-

screenshot_322.jpg

Having the usb already inserted, choose option 3 & press Enter.

You will see this-

screenshot_322.jpg

& then this-

screenshot_322.jpg

Let it finish. It will take a while.

Then run sfc /scannow.

Things should be fixed. :)

You don't get an install.wim anymore.

Just an install.esd.

This tiny program allows the dism cmd to use the install.esd as the source. :)

Please download and run SFCFix.

This will take about fifteen minutes to run the scan.

Once the scan has completed a notepad file will open with the results.  Copy and paste the log of the scan in your topic.

Do not use a host website which will require downloading this, and do not wrap this in code or quotes.

Thanks for the reply, I got the Repairing PC cycle again, as i was trying the DVD version of MediaCreation 8.1  - although originally this PC was on windows 8

So this time , I thought I would do a refresh of the PC

so now its at windows 8.0 version

And now waiting for the updated 174 of them to download - showing 0mb of 0% at the moment

So I do hopefully they will kick in and download soon !!!

Otherwise , I will be back with this new issue :( :(

SFC runs fine now - 100% OK

no more errors - So that solves that issue

Now back to Windows update, as i'm on W8 now, I wanted to do all the updates - Move to 8.1 and do all the updates

And then goto w10

Windows update hangs at 0%

i ran the trouble shooter

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/gp/windows-update-issues/en-gb

A few times and eventually it resolved all the issues

checked for updates and Run the update again and got 174 updates and moved to 820KB 13% - which it appears to be stuck on for the last 20mins

I have read on forums in the past

to uncheck ALL the .net updates and run again

Any more suggestions please

update

I got onto MS and asked for some help with getting the update to work

The remotely connected

Restarted about 5 services - so fast i did not see

Run a set of commands which i had already tried from here

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-corrupt-windows-image-error-0x800f0906

pretty much the same

then ran another sfc/scannow

then checked for updates - this time the updates where not preloaded

after getting the 175 updates

they only selected about the first 5or6 - cumulative updates

now the PC is running updates 1-29

they also said they would upgrade to windows 10 - so I will update tomorrow on that

i wish i had seen the services they started - all where on manual - but clearly the OP has done this before as it was so quick

and the commands scripted on CMD as it was fast

Thanks for all the help and assistance so far

As an update - that changed a little  - after the update noone reconnected  - so i went back to chat and was suggested there maybe a charge

anyway they said i needed to do all the updates all 157 that where left 1.7gb

so its been on 99% for quite a while now

at lease the updates did work before

and they did progress % wise - i suspect this is just the MS time and % and eventually sometime tonight it will restart

oh i hope so

Well, it still is not working !!!!

I then RESET the PC and choose to select just a few updates at a time

and most installed

then i started getting failures

and after a little more research - found out that it maybe due to the UEFI  secure boot

Many articles pointing to this issue

so I disabled that

a pow - all the updates installed very quickly and successfully

So now I'm updating to W8.1

looking at the Sony Website - although this model passed the basic tests for w10 - the advice is to wait before updating - until drivers are available

from the website these are due Nov 2015

That is one of the problems anytime Microsoft releases a new operating system.  The rest of the industry has to catch up with proper drivers.  Not to mention waiting for the general public to troubleshoot their new operating system. <_<
