The problem I am experiencing appears to occur when I connect my DSL modem (without going onto the Internet). I opened Windows Task Manager and can watch as the number of processes increases from around 70 to 95 or so. I am observing multiple processes that show the user name as “BLANK”. Some use up to around 900,000K Memory (Private Working Set) according to Task Manager. These processes (and there may be up to 8 or more instances of each - conhost.exe seems to have the most instances listed), show up in Task Manager with the following names:

                Cmd.exe

                Conhost.exe

                Consent.exe

                Ctfmon.exe

                Dllhost.exe

                Explorer.exe

                Msdtc.exe

                Msiexec.exe

                Notepad.exe

                Presentationhost.exe

                Taskhost.exe

None of these processes as I recall ever appeared on my computer at home before, and do not appear on my computer at work, which is not infected and runs normally. When I either shut down my infected computer, or do a restart, there are a bunch of webpages that pop up. They all appear to be some type of advertisement. They appear only briefly and I cannot read enough information on each one to try to identify the web pages they display. If I disconnect from my DSL connection and then shut down or do a restart, I get nothing but a “You’re not connected to a network” message on each of the screens. There appear to be about 7 or 8 webpages that only appear during the shutdown/restart process. Each screen disappears quickly during the shutdown/restart process. I tried to capture a video of the shutdown screens as they appear with my camera, and one of the first screens that appear has this text on it: “In an effort to provide our advertisers the best possible product and reduce click fraud we have selected this click for further validation. Please complete the captcha to proceed to your destination.” There is a “Click Shield Filter” logo that appears at the top with a brown-colored shield appearing. I also get a screen display that says, “Waiting for background programs to close.” After a brief period of time, the shutdown/restart completes.

My computer only runs about 10% as fast as it used to before this malware infected it. I am running Windows 7 Professional with 16 GB of RAM, and have McAfee virus software also running on my computer. Windows Task Manager reports higher-than-normal CPU usage and Physical Memory usage. I am very reluctant to use my computer for fear of identity theft/password theft/etc.

I'm hoping someone can help in deciphering this mess and offer a solution. Thank you!

Greetings AutoResearch and :welcome: to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.

My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.

If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.

===================================================

Ground Rules:
  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met.
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.
  • When you post your reply, use the Replytopic.jpg button instead.
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Followtopic.jpg button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Thank you for your patience thus far.

Please do this.

Hi Paul, I sent you a personal message.

We will certainly do our best. I don't expect this step to solve our issues. I am gathering more information to see if it is relevant to our problems.

===================================================

P2P Warning

--------------------

Going over your logs I noticed that you have µTorrent installed. It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.
  • Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.
  • They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.
  • Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.
  • The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications.
I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove the program, you can do so via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

If you are still leaning toward using this program, please take a look at this information about Ransomware which can be delivered via P2P file transfers. The newest variation of Ransomware can make it impossible to recover the files this malicious software encrypts. In other words, you will probably lose most if not all of your valuable information, including pictures. In addition it has recently been reported that P2P downloads may be tracked resulting in your IP address being monitored by copyright authorities. .

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until we are completely done and your machine is determined to be clean and updated.

AdwCleaner by Xplode - Delete Adware

-------------------
  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browser
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe, click Run, then select I agree if it appears
  • Click Scan
  • Once the scan has completed you will see Pending. Please check elements you don't want to remove above the progress bar
  • Click on Cleaning
  • Confirm the cleaning and rebooting of your computer by clicking OK
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart
  • Copy and paste the contents in your reply
===================================================

Hi Gary - thank you for the personal message. Duly noted. I also uninstalled uTorrent from my computer - too easy to use it, and obviously as you mentioned, a continual threat if used. One more unneeded thing gone from my computer.

I ran AdwCleaner and did the Scan. It did not appear to bring up much of anything. When prompted to uncheck elements I didn't want to remove, I did not see any, even though I looked through the tabs listed there. So I clicked on Clean. The computer rebooted and I got the AdwCleaner[C1].txt file. The contents of this file are pasted here, below:

I then generated the fixlist.txt file using Notepad and copied the text you had indicated in your last post. I ran FRST, pressed the Fix button and received the file to my desktop, and named it Fixlog.txt. The contents of the Fixlog.txt file are below:

Hi Gary - I added the two files you mentioned above in a new Notepad document, then ran FRST (which updated to a new version since we started fixing this). Here is the Fixlog.txt log generated a few minutes ago. Should I still see a lot of processes running in Windows Task Manager?

Hi Paul,

Yes you probably should still see those. One of the 2 files came back with information and that file is malicious. What I am attempting to do is determine what type of infection it represents. I have some concerns it is a significant infection and if my suspicions are correct it may change how we approach things.

Please do this.

===================================================

Virustotal Online Virus Scanner

--------------------
  • Please go to Virustotal
  • Select Choose File
  • Navigate to the following file (if multiple files then one at a time), double click on it so the file name is populated, then click Scan it!

Hi Gary - I opened the online Virustotal program, clicked on Choose File, then navigated to the file name you listed above. The actual file called 8afc49b02429a was in the subfolder. I highlighted it, double-clicked on it, and got the following message:

The file is in use. Enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program.

All I had was an OK button to push at that point. Guess I hit a roadblock, but don't know what other program is open that could be using that file name.

About a week ago, my system supposedly had a malware called Gen:Variant.Symmi.17133. The malware/virus software I had identified it and deleted it. But it failed to eliminate the main problem my computer had with multiple processes running and large memory usage/computer slowing down after my DSL was connected. I gave up on the other software after this, and after searching online for help, I found BleepingComputer.com.

Thanks,

Paul

Thank you for your great replies. Your explanations help a lot.

Let's do this. There won't be any change after running these because we are only gathering additional information.

===================================================

RogueKiller by Tigzy

--------------------
  • Download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop
  • Close all running programs
  • Right click on the icon and select Run as Administrator
  • For Windows XP simply double click on the icon
  • The program will conduct a prescan and when finished you wlll see Prescan Finished. Please hit the scan button
  • Click Scan
  • If, during the scan, you receive a request to upload a file to Virustotal please click Yes
  • A report should open and a copy of the report will be placed on your desktop. If not, hit the Report button.
  • If RogueKiller has been blocked, do not hesitate to try a few times more. If it really won't run, rename it winlogon.exe (or winlogon.com) and try again
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report in your reply
===================================================

Run TDSSKiller by Kaspersky

--------------------
  • Please download Kaspersky's TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe and select Run As Administrator.
  • When the program opens, click the Start Scan button.

tdss1.png

  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • Any objects found will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure...do not change it.

tdss2.png

  • Click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.<- Important!!

tdss4.png

  • If 'Suspicious' objects are detected, you will be given the option to Skip or Quarantine. Skip will be the default selection. Leave it as such for now.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply even if no threats are found.
-- If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to these instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to redownload TDSSKiller and randomly rename it before downloading and saving to the computer or to perform the scan in "safe mode".

===================================================

aswMBR

--------------------
  • Download aswMBR and save it to your desktop.
  • Please disable your real time protection of any Antivirus, Antispyware or Antimalware programs temporarily. They will interfere and may cause unexpected results.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here and here.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe file to run it. Please allow when you are asked to download AVAST antivirus engine defs.
  • Wait until the AV update is done, then click on the Scan button to start. The program will launch a scan.

aswMBR1.png

  • When done, you will see Scan finished successfully. Please click on Save log and save the file to your desktop.

aswMBR2.png

  • Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.
NOTE: aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Hi Gary - I had edited my previous reply to you...at about the same time you were writing up your reply, so you may not have seen the last paragraph I had added.

I ran RogueKiller, then TDSSKiller, and finally aswMBR (after turning off realtime protection in McAfee). However, aswMBR crashed and kicked me out, back to my Windows desktop. Should I run aswMBR again? It had downloaded all the virus definitions and was going through the scan when it crashed.

While I was running RogueKiller, my McAfee virus program popped up with a message that it had quarantined an infected file. I can't remember when the last time was that McAfee actually found something on my computer! McAfee's message box said,

     About this Trojan - Detected

     ARTEMIS!B8FA0745499A (Trojan)

I saved the log file for RogueKiller onto my desktop. Here is the contents of the RogueKiller.log:

The TDSSKiller.exe program completed with nothing found, so no log file was generated. 486 objects were scanned, but no threats were found.

I noticed that RogueKiller identified the Tr.Rosena Trojan - good to see the program found something!

Thank you,

Paul

Hi Paul,

It is good RogueKiller found something but unfortunately it is not good news. As a result of that particular entry I must advise you of the following.

===================================================

BACKDOOR WARNING!

--------------------

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable. Please let me know if you have already noticed evidences of financial institution irregularities. Those accounts should be monitored from this point forward.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Here are some thoughts I have put together for people who ask what they should do in light of the infection. Ultimately each user must decide for themselves what to do and the below are things you might want to consider.

It is necessary for us to at least make you aware of the worse case scenario. This is because of the potential Backdoor Trojans bring with them, but it is not a determination on our part that your situation currently falls within this worse case scenario.

Ultimately it is a personal decision whether to reformat or not. What decision should you make to let you sleep well at night? It is different for different people. I will say whether rightly or wrongly most people decide to clean and not reformat, at least initially.

The only insight I can offer is how I evaluate the issue personally even though I have never had a Backdoor Trojan on my computer. One of the primary purposes for malicious software is to somehow separate you from your money. It seems reasonable to assume that a thief trying to take your money via a Backdoor Trojan will hit you hard, and quickly. Once your computer starts to act up and you become suspicious you have the opportunity to eliminate access to your computer and change the information taken, namely account and password information. The key to this, in my opinion, is whether or not you have noticed any irregularities in your banking or other financial institutions, or things like email and social network accounts (i.e. Facebook). If you have not seen any evidence of that then you may question whether your information has truly been stolen. If it seems it hasn't, and your critical information has been changed, it is reasonable to be more confident you are safe but you must stop short of claiming an absolute guarantee.

If, after careful consideration you decide not to reformat your computer it would be wise to continue monitoring your sensitive data and don't wait to address future symptoms on your computer which seem to be malware related.

The bottom line, the only way to be absolutely sure to be rid of a Backdoor Trojan is to reformat. The decision is yours.

Oh My!

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

===================================================

RogueKiller Selecting Deletions

--------------------
  • Close any open programs
  • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run the scan
  • For Vista/7 users right click on the RogueKiller icon and select Run as Administrator
  • For Windows XP simply double click on the icon
  • Allow the Prescan to finish
  • Click Scan
  • When the Status box shows Scan Finished place a checkmark in the following and select Delete

Hi Gary - it may be too soon to see if anything else is going on. I most likely will reformat my hard drive and start from scratch. I did decide to delete the infected file now, and I have changed my password for my email account as one step towards protection. I will have access hopefully tomorrow morning from another computer to log onto my bank's website. I don't want to do it from home right now.

Here is the logfile after running RogueKiller most recently:

Would it be a good idea to delete the suspicious paths noted above, or run any other program? Or would Windows Restore Point work (or is that even a smart option)?

Thank you so much for all your help! I really appreciate it!

Those suspicious file paths are associated with aswMBR and are safe. If you decide you want to reformat what we should do is transfer all of your data files (music, pictures, documents, etc.) onto an external drive then we can scan that drive to make sure we do not reintroduce any infections into a clean computer.

Going back to a previous Restore Point will not help us at all.

Do you want to sleep on it overnight and decide for sure tomorrow? I am here to help you to the end whether or not you decide to reformat.

Hi Gary - I will plan to work on copying the documents/pictures etc. that I need onto an external drive. I want to log off the Internet, and do a cold boot before I start anything tonight.

I'm thinking I may sleep on this tonight. I'm going to see my daughter and son-in-law tomorrow morning, and hopefully be able to get on a clean computer to see if anything bad has happened. I was on my bank's website late yesterday, and it appeared to be fine then. Hopefully it will still be fine until I can change some information online from a clean computer.

I probably won't be able to get back on here until late tomorrow evening, but I may need some coaching to reformat my hard drive. My computer is an HP - refurbished. When I bought it, the first thing I did was to make a set of recovery DVDs - hopefully I can find them as I may need them to start over.

Thanks again for all your help! Have a great evening!

Paul
