Hello all,

I have a strange issue. Dell Studio xps running Windows 7 was working completely fine. I wake up this morning to find the computer has restarted itself. I log in to my user and the computer is extremely sluggish. Many different programs won't open and computer just locks up. Safe mode seems to be more stable so I thought it might be a video card issue... opened up the machine and made sure all connections were tight and dust free.

Haven't downloaded anything new. Windows updates won't start without me doing it. Tried start up repair.. nothing. Last resort now trying to check for viruses in safe mode although I doubt this is the issue... any ideas?

Are there any error codes in the log file?

I can't get to it...

Literally all i can do is click on my account and log in... after that, system is completely unstable.  Cant right click anything or even click start menu.  Safe mode is slightly more stable but was locking up on me last night as well.

I had a somewhat similar issue to this once before with this machine, i opened it up and meticulously cleaned all the connections on the video card and put everything together tightly and it magically did the trick. I tried that again and this time it didnt work...

If you want to try a long shot, on another computer download both regular and portable copies of tweaking.com's windows repair (all in one), install the portable version onto any USB or DVD media storage.  Safe Mode with Networking boot your problem computer - insert USB or DVD, "aim" explorer.exe at it, run windows repair (all in one) with defaults and checkmark items 26 & 27.  Let it finish, restart.

Thank you, it's worth a shot. I will try this when I get home tonight.

I really have a feeling it has something to do with the power or a connection or something.  I have to admit the thing is about 6 years old but works (err... worked) great. The thing that irks me is that safemode seemed to be more stable.

Ahhh, ok, can you give us some specs?  How much RAM?  How big and how full is the primary active partition [often called c-drive]?  What stuff is normally plugged into the USB ports?  What video chipset/card is in it?  Also, it might be time to download and run MiniToolbox, take care to not checkmark any resets yet.  Be prepared to give any regular BC tech the results.

8gb ram

Primary partition isnt even 20% full.

Only things plugged in are mouse/keyboard/wireless receiver

I forgot the video card, but it has some decent specs on it.  I will have to check that stuff and download minitoolbox when I get home.

There was some serious dust on the vid card when i opened it up.  I was hoping that would fix it (as it did before)... speaking of.  would that really cause an issue or was it coincidental that i got it to work previously?

Once/twice yearly opening up desktops and carefully dusting all components is always a good idea!  Laptops - well, I leave that to those who can see better than I.

Hi Sug,, please run these.....

SXvL3ZF.pngTDSSKiller
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
zcMPezJ.pngAdwCleaner
  • Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
lv0mVRW.pngJunkware Removal Tool
  • Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
cvMlKv6.pngESET Online Scanner
  • Click here to download the installer for ESET Online Scanner and save it to your Desktop.
  • Disable all your antivirus and antimalware software - see how to do that here.
  • Right click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Place a checkmark in YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start. Wait for ESET Online Scanner to load its components.
  • Select Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Click Advanced Settings, then place a checkmark in the following:
    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Click Start to begin scanning.
  • ESET Online Scanner will start downloading signatures and scan. Please be patient, as this scan can take quite some time.
  • When the scan is done, click List threats (only available if ESET Online Scanner found something).
  • Click Export, then save the file to your desktop.
  • Click Back, then Finish to exit ESET Online Scanner.

How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

I will try the above steps. However even safe mode was extremely unstable yesterday as well. I'm wondering if I should just reformat at this point...

If there is not much else it may be the quickest solution.
