Hello,

Not sure what caused it, but my ethernet adapter (Atheros PCI-E Ethernet Controller) seems to have stopped working. I've tried different solutions I've found through google and all of them haven't resolved my issue. When I tried to (ipconfig) release and renew, I get an error indicating the ethernet adapter isn't able to contact the DHCP server. I've tried rebooting my computer, the router, uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet adapter drivers, and netsh dump/winsock resets. Both IPv4 and IPv6 are set to 'Obtain an IP address and DNS address automatically'.

My router is a ASUS N66U, wired directly with a 2ft cable.

My MiniToolBox results:

Do you have other devices that connect fine to the router?

Have you tried a different cable?

Your Ethernet adapter cannot connect with the DHCP server of router and is using private link local IP.
Check if the cables are not damaged. Then inspect if the Ethernet ports on both computer and router have no pins damaged(use a small light source). Try a different Ethernet port and cable if necessary.

Make sure your firewall and antivirus are disabled while trouble shooting.

At worst case, you may need to buy a new Ethernet card (in case of PC, or give the laptop for service/use wireless)

PC or laptop can use a usb wifi stick.  Cheap and easy to install.

But inquiry wise we are still early in the game.  Too soon to draw conclusions.  Lets investigate a bit more :-)

Do you have other devices that connect fine to the router?

Have you tried a different cable?

Yes, I have a wireless USB stick that I'm using while my ethernet adapter is down. It's able to connect on this PC just fine.

Just checked the cable and port and it looks ok from what I can tell. Trying a different cable as well and no difference.

Have you tried resetting router? Use a ball point pen or straightened paperclip to push the reset  button.(its usually in a small pit near power input)

If that doesn't help, uninstall the ethernet adapter driver (Atheros) from control panel, restart and install the latest one.

Gave both a try and the issue still remains.

Do you run a program named HostsMan? If yes, disable it, reboot and see if it works. Also, check Firefox's proxy settings.

Hope this helps thumbup.gif

Nope, don't run HostsMan, but I did used to run VPN through Private Internet Access. I've since uninstalled their app and am not using a VPN.

Can you run Minitoolbox and include List of Installed Programs next time please? There is an error with spybot of which you could remove as it is not recommended nowadays. Include also FSS tool log below.

Download then run Farbar Service Scanner and checkmark all boxes.
Click Scan and then a Notepad text will open. Copy-Paste the report on your next reply.

Looks like we all missed this in the mini dump:

Name: Realtek RTL8188CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter
Description: Realtek RTL8188CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter
Class Guid: {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
Manufacturer: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Service: RTL8192cu
Device ID: USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8176\00E04C000001
Problem: : This device is disabled. (Code 22) <--- opps!!!
Resolution: In Device Manager, click "Action", and then click "Enable Device". This starts the Enable Device wizard. Follow the instructions.

Try enabling the device.

But I suspect your system has been hacked/malwared.  Isn't just Spybot that is having problems but so is chrome and dcom [system].

For starts I would suggest a repair install of the OS.  Then hit the malware forum here to clear up the rest.

Ok, uninstalled Spybot and gave Minitoolbox another try:

Looks like we all missed this in the mini dump:

Resolution: In Device Manager, click "Action", and then click "Enable Device". This starts the Enable Device wizard. Follow the instructions.

Try enabling the device.

But I suspect your system has been hacked/malwared.  Isn't just Spybot that is having problems but so is chrome and dcom [system].

For starts I would suggest a repair install of the OS.  Then hit the malware forum here to clear up the rest.

That's the wireless adapter that I've been using to access the internet while my ethernet adapter is having these errors. While I'm running these fixes I have the wireless disabled, but will re-enable it to access the internet to get to this forum.
