What happens when it 'doesn't let me access the hd"? What is the error message?

Here is the link for an ntfs boot disk (on the chance that it is the problem):

thnx groovicus i was looking for that link.

The message that should appear is:

Can not read from Drive C:\
A-abort,R-retry,I-ignore

So what happens is that DOS is not recognizing the HD. When booting to XP (I am guessing that is the current operating system) windows recognizes it because Windows has NTFS support. DOS on the other hand does not naturally have NTFS surrport making DOS believe there is no Drive C:\
