Hello folks

I am running HP xw4400 with a new installation of W7.

The only Browser is Internet Explorer.

I tried direct download as well as download to USB.

I E blocks all attempts even when I tried  'Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall'.

Any advice please ?.

Thanks

Try again, please.

I've download Firefox, using IE 8 and IE 11, with no problems on either version of Windows installed.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

Many thanks for your quick response.

You mentioned no problem with E11, so I realised I must be runner an earlier Version. Downloaded E11 and downloaded other programs too. Did not reply earlier because I had a problem Pasting. Solved , so send the info you required. Please see below.

There is a chance, just a chance, that this might not be a problem for all of firefox but rather for one feature within firefox. I remember some months back a new version of FF came out which had some kind of "phone calls through the internet" feature built in, when I updated FF to the version where this feature was included I saw a firewall po-up about it. I denied it the ability to go through the firewall but firefox still worked, as it seems it was only this one feature (one which I personally never use) which seemed to have firewall problems. This could be your cause, but if it were I would expect that the rest of firefox should all run fine whichever way you were to choose on the firewall.

It MIGHT be necessary for you to turn down certain security features in windows and IE to a lower level for the time it takes to install FF, then turn them back up afterwards, but you should let hamluis see if he can work out anything from the logs you've posted before you do this. There are cases where certain settings in IE make download of files impossible unless those settings are changed, it could be this security feature causing the problem.

P.S. I assume you've been downloading and saving the firefox installer exe file, not trying to "run" it at the point of download, If you have been so far using the "run" method, try downloading, saving and then running from a folder instead.

P.S.2 You say IE is blocking firefox, what error message is it giving? I assume it says SOMETHING when it blocks the download or installation (which is it stopping? or both) of FF.

Although you're saying your only browser is IE, the list of your installed programs is showing Google Chrome. Have you tried downloading Firefox with that browser?

When I could not download Firefox, I downloaded E11, I then used E11 to download Google Chrome because I understood it uses less resources than Firefox. That is how it came to be in the list of Programs. So I will use Google for the time being instead of firefox. As I have just upgraded from XP to W7 I will wait until the system is stable and then decide whether to use Firefox, but I will check to see if I need to upgrade other areas, such as the RAM.

One of the negative comments I hear the most about Chrome is its high memory usage. I don't believe Firefox uses more.

Phantom010 Post #7:

Certainly in my experience firefox is faster than chrome and uses less processing power, although the difference isn't huge it is there. Either is orders of magnitude better than IE. With the installation of certain extensions though FF does have a security advantage over chrome, in it's default state without these extensions chrome and FF are about equally secure most of the time.
