itunes update, now I get csc.exe errors

Hello. I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 problem, or an itunes problem, so please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place.

 

The problem is on my desktop, running Windows 7.

 

 

Just recently, I got my first ever ipod (it's an older model, that my friend gave to me).

 

My friend and I downloaded itunes onto my desktop just two or three days ago.

 

This morning, itunes said that it wanted to update, so I let it.

 

The update seemed to install, but immediately, I started getting a pop-up error message that says:

 

csc,exe - Application Error

The application was unable to start correctly (0x0000142). Click OK to close the application.

 

 

Every time I've clicked 'ok', another error box pops up, with the same error message. I went into 'uninstall program', and uninstalled all of the apple/itunes stuff, but same error message keeps returning....every few seconds.

 

Tried to to a 'system restore', to a point a few days ago, but then system restore says that it has encountered a problem, and retry. Every time I retry system restore, the error message pops up saying:

 

"There was an unexpected error in the property page. System restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again (0x81000203). Please close the property page and try again".

 

 

Any help, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Quick question....should mini toolbox be taking twenty minutes, and not be done? Should I close it and start it over?

Mini Toolbox is still running (has been running now since 4:30pm this afternoon, but maybe that's a good thing?), so I thought that I'd run Speccy in the meantime.

 

But when I tried to run Speccy, that same error message popped up for Speccy (ie, the csc.exe - Application Error..."This application was unable to start correctly (0x0000142). Click OK to close the application").

Also, I did manage to get Speccy to run, but....I'm not sure what happened when it finished. I may have to run it again. I'm sorry about that.

Hamluis....I'm sorry to have to say this, but there is a huge thunderstorm coming my way, with severe lightning.

 

And this may be stupid, but this is when I unplug stuff. Will have to run Speccy tomorrow.

Finally.....Speccy. I'm sorry that this took so long. :(

Hopefully, all of the information is there.

 

While Speccy was running...in the CPU, RAM, and motherboard area, there was information there at one point, but then the info turned red, and says now "bad allocation".

Went and ran Dell System Detect three times...failed three times. Something is not letting me download the Dell System Detect client.

 

 

These are the error messages from that:

 

An error occurred trying to download 'http://downloads.dell.com/tools/dellsystemdetect/DellSystemDetect.application'.

See the setup log file located at 'C:\Users\EdJen\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD9263.tmp\install.log' for more information.

 

 

 

When I went to the file location (AppData/Local/Temp...ect), this is what was in the file:

Appears to me that you have system problems that are unrelated to Windows 7...and which may relate to dysfunctional components.

 

OTOH...the cause may not be hardware but malware...I can't say what it is, nor what it is not.

 

Without the Dell Diagnostic...speculation without substance is all that I could come up with.

 

Moved topic to Internal Hardware forum, where the more knowledgeable may advise.

Since posting this topic, I've done some digging on my own into the problems that I've been having.

Which lead me to this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135 .....which didn't seem too difficult, so I thought that I would give it a try.

 

 

I did try it, and it went well. Through using msconfig.exe in the way that the article said to, and by process of elimination, I found that the programs (or services?) causing the problems, are:

 

-Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 12 (which I have never used that I know of, and didn't even know that I had, until going through this process).

 

-SoftThinks Agent Service (which is apparently part of the Dell Data Safe backup).

 

-WD Rules (which seems to have something to do with my external hard drive, which is currently NOT in use, and is boxed up in my closet).

 

 

So now since I think that I know which services are causing the issue, I moved on to try a system restore, while in 'clean boot mode' (to reset my computer, back to a time before I loaded itunes on here). 

 

I have just completed the 'clean boot mode' system restore, and the error message is gone (the system restore, also booted me back up into normal mode...not back up into clean mode).

 

 

Everything seems to be back to normal, so....I'm thinking that perhaps the itunes update, just threw these other services off? I don't know, but....things seem to be running okay again.

 

 

Thank you BC for your amazing help. Because of you, I was able to narrow down the problem (I think...I hope), and you also pointed me into the right direction, where the answers were waiting for me.

Nice troubleshooting on your part.

 

I suggest you set a new restore point now that it seems to be performing better...before moving on.
