I'm a very, very low tech computer person. (FYI)

I installed windows10 and it's been freezing ever since then...multiple times a day. I've read some of the forums and I have an error log but this site won't let me attach it.  I've tried to update my drivers, but the computer freezes before it finishes.

Please help!!

Cathy

Hello there,

If the system is hanging randomly, it could be caused by damaged system files, software compatibility, or damaged registry files. Corrupt system files can cause Windows Explorer to stop responding. You can repair corrupted system files by running the System Update Readiness tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/947821

Hope this helps!

Hello and thank you.  I tried the link, but the computer froze up on me, and I couldn't continue.

I'm going to try it again tomorrow.

I appreciate your help.

I've seen lot's of issues w/W10 on systems that have had a lot of use.

To attach the error log, zip it up and then attempt to attach it.

If that doesn't work, then upload it to a free file-hosting site like OneDrive or DropBox.  Share it and then post a link to it here.

FYI - I like to look at these reports:

Let's try looking at these reports:

1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/

2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 1.0.16) dates from 2008.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

FYI - I had a Lenovo tablet with a 2008 BIOS and it was incapable of handling W8.  You may want to consider the age of the system and decide if the computer is compatible w/W10.

You have at least 2 antivirus programs installed.  Only run one antivirus program and one firewall at a time.  They can cause problems up to and including BSOD's.

Drivers from Sophos, Avast, and MalwareBytes are all present in the memory dumps.

While the latest BSOD blames video, previous BSOD's (from the WER section of MSINFO32) show networking and non-specific errors.

I strongly suspect compatibility issues here.  We can continue to troubleshoot this, but at some point you'll have to decide if further work is worth your time spent.

For now, download a fresh set of the latest, W10 compatible video drivers.  Then uninstall the current drivers and install the freshly downloaded one's.

Otherwise this tends to look similar to many other problems that we've seen with W10 being installed on well-used systems.

There's a couple of things to try:
1)  Run the following command in a Powershell window that's run as an Administrator in order to re-register the Windows Store apps:

Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
From this article:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/re-register-windows-store-apps

2)  Uninstall your antivirus, then use the removal tool for it (there's a list of most of them here:  http://www.carrona.org/avuninst.html ), then install a freshly downloaded, W10 compatible version.  Some A/V have difficulties with the upgrade, so removing them and then reinstalling them will help how they run.

3)  Download fresh copies of the latest, W10 compatible audio and video drivers for your system.  Then uninstall the current versions from your system.  Then install the freshly downloaded versions.

4)  Get ALL available Windows Updates

5)  Get ALL available, W10 compatible drivers/programs from the manufacturer's website.  If some aren't compatible w/W10, check here about uninstalling them.

6)  Get ALL available, W10 compatible drivers/programs for any add-on hardware and any software that you installed previously.  If they aren't compatible, please uninstall them.

If this doesn't fix things, then post back so we can discuss the following options:
- continuing to attempt to fix this copy of the OS
- Reset of the OS (considering both the "Keep My Files" and the "Remove Everything" options)
- revert to the previous OS
- revert to the previous OS with another attempt at installing W10 (I don't recommend this)
- clean install of the previous OS
- clean install of the previous OS, then update to W10
- W10 clean install

It's probably a good idea to order a new computer - and it'll work better on W10 than an older system would.

Let us know what you get and how you like it (I'm going to purchase a new system within the next several months myself).

Will do.  My daughter helped me respond to your questions and to run the error reports, etc.  She's now helping us with looking at new ones.

It takes a village to raise a computer-literate senior!

Many thanks, again.

Everyone is good at something.  I'm 63 and didn't learn about computers until fairly late in life.

I tell my customers that I still have my kids help with my DVR (used to be my VHS) and my phone - but I'm the go-to-guy for computer problems.

Good luck to you!
