Hi,

I have a few different things popping up on my computer and AVG is finding a virus or two on almost every scan. Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy find several things each time I use them but never seem to permanently delete them. I was hoping to get some help in cleaning my system.

Here is my HijackThis log:

Hello,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Also, Can you rename Hijackthis.exe to Analyse.exe
Then scan with Analyse.exe and post the log in your next reply (which will be a hijackthislog ofcourse)

  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • In case it says that nothing was been found, Right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
  • Select “Add More Files?” from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
  • In the Window: copy and paste next in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpn.dll
  • Copy and paste next in the second field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\npqss.*
  • Click the “Add Files” button.

Hello,

Can you perform this step in Safe mode?
* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • Click the "Close Window" button.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
Post the vundolog in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

When I was in Safe Mode, Windows kept "restarting". The computer didn't reboot, but the icons would disappear and the message you get whenever you enter Safe Mode would appear on the screen. I was not able to run VundoFix as a task because it would take too long to start and be interrupted by the computer "restarting" every minute or so. I was able to run it by clicking Scan and I added the two files.

Here are the logs:

Well,
In anyway, it looks like that did the trick though..

Just some leftovers to fix in hijackthis...

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2F1935C6-4D4F-4527-9CC1-9113B777089A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpn.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {B942A249-D1E7-4C11-98AE-FCB76B08747F} (RealArcadeRdxIE Class) - http://games-dl.real.com/gameconsole/Bundl...ArcadeRdxIE.cab

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

There's still something I would like to check though, so perform next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox in it:

regedit /a look.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run"
start notepad look.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and notepad should open.
Copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply.
In case you are unsure how to create a bat file, take a look here with screenshots.
It could be possible that it says that it couldn't find look.txt, and an blank textfile opens. This means that this key is not present.

Miekiemoes,

When clicked on the look.bat file to open it, I got the message that said "Cannot find the look.txt file"

Hello,

Yes, that's why I also said this in my instructions:

It could be possible that it says that it couldn't find look.txt, and an blank textfile opens. This means that this key is not present.

So we are ok here.

How are things running now?

Oh...I thought you meant that if I got that message something was wrong and we'd have to take additional steps. I guess I misunderstood :flowers:

Things seem to be ok. I haven't had any of those programs like Winantivirus 2006 and such popping up. I'm did a scan with AVG that found two viruses, but a follow-up scan was clean. Is there anything else I should do before I create a new System Restore point?

Thank you for your help. I'll make a donation to the site as this place is an invaluable resource!

Well, I guess we are finished here.
Perform a full scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D to get rid of some leftovers if still present.
If you don't have those programs yet, you can find the downloadlocations in my signature.

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
