Mod Edit:  Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/551374/thread-stuck-in-device-driver/#entry3814863 - Hamluis

Hello Arachibutyrophobia,

I see you are online, and hope that you can assist.  I have read your post recommending the Driver Verifier  (in connection with "thread-stuck-in-device-driver").

I have set up Driver Vwerrifier as per you instructions, and I have had the first crash (Driver Verifier Detected Violation).

Unfortunately, in your excellent post you have not said how I can see which drive has triggered the fault. There was the  :-( Windows 10 blue screen, but this only remained visible for a few seconds. How please can I see Driver Verifier's list?

" If there is a faulty driver Verifier should list it.  Once you have identified the faulty driver"

Many thanks,

fosh90

Hi Bruce,

I will have to get back to your tomorrow.  My wife has doctor appointments.

I have requested that your posts be split from this topic to create your own.

Let's start from the beginning.

Please explain exactly what is happening with this computer.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox to your desktop.

Right-click on MiniToolBox.exe and select Run as Administrator.

You will see an image like the one below.

Click on the following checkboxes only:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, then copy it and paste it in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Hello and thank you for your responses so far.

I have not yet been able to run Speccy because it twice immediately triggered a BSOD, generating a long alphanumeric string that I cannot copy down in the time allowed. I looked for but haven't yet found it in the MTB log, which I am copying below:

I will compose and send a precis of what's been happening separately, after this post.

Kind regards,

The 2TB HDD failed within a month, and was replaced under warranty. I actually got two identical replacement drives which I set up as RAID1.

I have a 2TB WD Elements external HDD connected by USB 3.0.

Also a Saitek RumbleForce ST330 joystick (as old as Win NT, but still works - don't think it's an issue).

The graphics card (2GB AMD Radeon R7 260X) connects by two DVI cables to two monitors (1x20" 1x22" different manufacturers)

The external speaker system is a Logitech S500 S-01087C 5.1 which is getting on a bit. I doubt whether this would create system instability .

Sound is handled on the motherboard by “AMD High Definition Audio Device” (driver 10.0.0.1 6/9/2015).

I use a Logitech WiFi kbd mouse, but often a Gigibyte M6900 wired mouse and generic wired kbd when I run out of batteries. There’s a Canon MG6650 printer – its WiFi connection keeps dropping to offline .

Yesterday I ran Driver Verifier and got two types of crash. I caught the strings CLBUDF.sys and ATHRX.sys.

The first related to Cyberlink PowerDVD/BluRay suite, which according to their website, had components incompatible with Windows 10. I uninstalled it completely.

The second related to the Edimax WiFi card. I followed the trail to the latest driver and installed it. This seemed to solve the printer WiFi issue yesterday, but it’s back again.

Driver Verifier is still on - perhaps this explains why Speccy triggered the BSOD, with the long alphanumeric string that I wasn't able to capture.

THE MAIN ISSUE

The main issue is that the PC has been unstable almost all year and it has been very difficult to diagnose the root cause.

Periodically, the monitors go black, or the OS simply freezes.  This can happen several times a day, or once a week.

Very hard to say what triggers this - a bold mouse move, an ALT-TAB to switch between applications or selecting a new one from the taskbar. Sometimes power-saving mode kicking in can do it.

Memtest revealed nothing.

I have swapped out the graphics card with another PC. Both PCs then ran for several weeks without the problem. The moment I swapped the graphics card back to their original PCs, the issue arose again. So it’s not actually the graphics card – more like how it interfaces with something.

With that in mind, the PC has just returned from the manufacturer. They replaced the motherboard, graphics card AND power supply.

Despite this, the PC continues to crash.

I would be very appreciative of any advice you could offer.

Try running the computer in Safe Mode.

Open the Search charm and type in msconfig.

msconfig will open below the search box, click/tap on it.

When System Configuration opens click/tap the Boot tab.

In Boot options place a check in the Safe boot box, then click/tap on Network.

When you restart the computer it will boot into Safe Mode with networking.

See if the problem persists in Safe Mode.

You will need to go back to System Configuration and click/tap on Minimal and remove the check in Safe boot to stop the computer from booting into Safe Mode.

Hi dc3,

I responded yesterday, but the post appears not to have been accepted. I have tried twice this morning with the same result. I am trying this time with an attachment rather than with the speccy result inline.

Anyway, I did boot into Safe Mode and ran speccy again.

It did complete, though with an error.

Thanks for your time and interest.

I will not download anything to my computer unless I know exactly what it contains.

The Speccy generates a hyperlink which you post in your topic.  When it is clicked on another web page will open with the results of the Speccy.  If you have followed the instructions that I posted correctly you should be able to post the hyperlink.

Hi dc3. I understand your caution of course.

The txt file contained only the speccy results.

I exported them to txt because I wasn't sure that the PC retained Internet connectivity in Safe Mode with networking.
I was unable to save a message with the speccy results pasted into this box. I tried it on three separate occasions.

Anyway, I have had another go at your method, and though the taskbar network icon shows 'not connected' as I had expected, the Internet is there. You live and learn!

Speccy runs, but throws this error:

"CPU dll init failed (error 2)!
Some information will not be displayed!"

Nevertheless, I have successfully generated the hyperlink this time, so here you go:

That was with 1.26.

Have found latest version 1.28.709 and regenerated:

Try running the computer in Safe Mode.

Open the Search charm and type in msconfig.

msconfig will open below the search box, click/tap on it.

When System Configuration opens click/tap the Boot tab.

In Boot options place a check in the Safe boot box, then click/tap on Network.

When you restart the computer it will boot into Safe Mode with networking.

See if the problem persists in Safe Mode.

You will need to go back to System Configuration and click/tap on Minimal and remove the check in Safe boot to stop the computer from booting into Safe Mode.

Hi again DC3.

I absolutely agree with " Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you",

I have the same priorities.

Kind regards,

I have now done a clean install of Win 10.

New speccy snapshot (SAFE MODE no longer required):

Did reinstalling Windows 10 resolve the issue?

Probably too early to say whether everything is solved. Certainty stable so far. But I have also disconnected the external WD HDD (USB 3.0) as this was also a suspect.  Will reconnect when happy that W10 really is stable to investigate that suspect..

Regards.
