Operating system: Windows 7

Hello!

This is the first time I post here and I'm hoping I can get some help so that I can finally sleep well at night. Let me bring you up to speed on my background and situation (I'm gonna try to be as detailed as possible to avoid confusion so please bare with me).

It all started almost 3 weeks ago, I was surfing some semi-reliable adult sites when I all of a sudden got redirected to a website claiming to be from the local police (Sweden) and said that I had been distributing ilegal material. At first I panicked but as I kept reading and saw that they demanded a fine to be paid within 48 hours I knew it was a scam (the url was also a dead giveaway once I took a look at it). So at this point I tried to close down the tab but whenever I did my browser would say "are you sure you want to leave", or something in those lines (the same message you get if you try to close Facebook in the middle of a post for example) and the message would disapear after 1 second. All I had to do though was press X on the tab and then quickly navigate to the "leave site" option before it disapeared, and that did the trick.

Once I had closed the malicious site and confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my browser, I closed the browser and then the PC by pressing the manual off-button (somehow it had gotten through my head that it would be safer that way, don't laugh please :P ).

Thankfully I had a surf pad which I would then use to do all my research from there on out. After a long stage of cyber-hypochondria I found out that the thing that matched my situation the most was a malware attack called "your browser has been locked". The strange thing though is that my browser had infact NOT been locked! My guess is that because the redirect happened in "private browsing" the potential browser hijacker was unable to permanently save itself to the cache (is this a correct assumption to make?).

To be on the safe side, I wanted to do a full scan with my ESET Smart Security 8. But since I used to be a massive noob on internet security, I hadn't paid any attention to the fact that my trial had expired quite some time earlier. (Before all this happened I knew next to nothing about how malware works, but after all the research I have done afterwards I am familiar with most types of malware).

Anyway, the really wierd part was that the entire program seemed to be broken. I was unable to change settings for the firewall, unable to view my earlier scan logs, and when I pressed the the "Trial Expired" notification I was directed to the Russian version of their site (nod32.ru) instead of the English or Swedish version (wtf?). The wierdest thing was that when I performed a scan it would say:

Objects scanned: 0
Objects cleaned:0

I though this might have something to do with the trial being expired so I decided to get a full license of ESET and entered it. I was still having the problems and was ready to try a reinstall, but instead I thought I would try the repair tool first. This fixed all the problems and ESET was working better than ever before!

Now I was ready to do some scanning and cleaning. I ran a scan with all of the following programs (MBAM and ESET I already had, the rest I downloaded in safe mode).

Rkill
Malwarebytes Anti Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
Hitman Pro
ESET Smart Security 8
ESET Online Scanner

All of these programs found nothing, except a bunch of tracking cookies! I thought this had to be too good to be true, so I started to think that I might have a rootkit. I downloaded and ran the following programs:

Malwarebytes Anti Rootkit
Kaspersky TDSSkiller
Bitdefender Bootkit Remover

All of them found nothing. Now most people would probably assume that the computer was safe, but since I'm a bit paranoid, I though that I might have a new virus that the current signature databases can't detect. So I decided to leave the computer off for around 2.5 weeks (a few days ago). At this time, I updated all the anti-malwareprograms's signatures and did some scans.
I first scanned with MBAM which found nothing, but when I scanned with ESET it found two "HTML/ScrInject.B.Gen virus"s and deleted them! After that I ran ESET again, and the ESET Online Scanner to confirm that they where infact really gone, the scans came up clean.

My main questions are, is my computer really 100% safe now? What is a "HTML/ScrInject.B.Gen virus"? Why did it slip past all those security programs the first time? Any help will be very much appreciated!

I downloaded and ran FRST according to your instructions, here are the two logs for the scan:

Hello Big Mike42, and
:welcome:  to BleepingComputer!
My name is Jason and I'll be helping you with your computer problems. You can call me by my screename jntkwx or Jason is fine.

Ground Rules:

  • First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met.  :)
  • Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
  • Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence.
  • Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.
  • When you post your reply, use the Replytopic.jpg button.
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the Followtopic.jpg button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
  • If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
  • When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.
  • I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.
  • Now let's get started  :thumbup2:

===================================================

Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.

Note to others: The instructions here are intended for the person who began this topic. If you need help, please create your own topic in the appropriate forum.

My guess is that because the redirect happened in "private browsing" the potential browser hijacker was unable to permanently save itself to the cache (is this a correct assumption to make?).

Yes, this is probably a correct assumption to make.

My main questions are, is my computer really 100% safe now? What is a "HTML/ScrInject.B.Gen virus"? Why did it slip past all those security programs the first time? Any help will be very much appreciated!

After we double check your computer with an additional scan, I can't 100% guarantee that your computer is completely safe (the only way to do that is to completely erase your hard drive and reinstall Windows), however I can say that it is likely safe.

HTML/ScrInject.B.Gen isn't really a "virus", ESET has detected malicious code in a website and/or a website that is known to host malware. It probably slipped past the programs the first time because when the ESET scan was run again, it updated its definitions (these are usually updated several times every day), so there were many updated definitions over the 2.5 weeks the computer was turned off.

ZN3USrZ.png Emsisoft Emergency Kit
  • Click here to download Emsisoft Emergency Kit. The download will automatically start after a moment.
  • Save EmsisoftEmergencyKit.exe to your Desktop.
  • Double click on EmsisoftEmergencyKit.exe (Windows Vista/7/8 users: Accept UAC warning if it is enabled). A screen like this will appear:
    dQVDkTW.png
  • Leave everything as it is, then click Extract. This will unpack Emsisoft Emergency Kit to the EEK folder located in the root drive (usually C:\).
  • Once the extraction is done, an icon qwL1Upn.png will appear on your Desktop. Double click it to start Emsisoft Emergency Kit.
  • Wait for Emsisoft Emergency Kit to finish loading signatures. A screen like this should appear:
    yEgPemv.png
  • Choose Yes, then wait for EEK to finish updating.
  • Choose Malware Scan under the Scan button. When EEK asks to activate PUP detection, choose Yes.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
    RUeRoi4.png
  • If EEK detects something, all detected items will be displayed. Place a checkmark before everything, then choose Quarantine Selected.
  • If Emsisoft Emergency Kit asks to reboot, please do so immediately.
  • The scan log is located in Logs -> Scan Logs. Click on the entry of the latest scan, choose Export and save the report on your Desktop.

  • Please Copy and Paste the contents of the scan log in your next reply.

Regards,
Jason

Hello Jason! You can just call me Mike from now on if you prefer :)

I downloaded and ran emnisoft emergency kit like you instructed. But I'm a little bit confused about the logs... There's probably nothing to it, but for some reason the log would not show up in the "scan log" section of the program after the scan (it did however show up in a notepad window). I had to close the program down and re-open it for the log to show up there (I hope this was ok with you).

But that aside, I'm not sure which log I'm supposed to post. If I open the log I extracted to the desktop, the content just looks like this:

Emsisoft Emergency Kit - Version 10.0
Scan log

2015-09-09 14:33:59    Malware    85074    3    0:09:53    Manual scan

But if I view the log by clicking "view details" from withing the program, it looks like this:

Hi Mike,

The second log file is the one I was looking for. The things Emsisoft found are considered potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), which are not considered viruses.

How is your computer running now?

Jason

Honestly, my computer has been running completely fine all the time. It hasn't been running any slower than usual, I'm not seeing any wierd CPU-hogging procceces or anything like that (but then again, ever since the redirect happened I have only used the PC to a bare minimum.) None of my personal accounts have been accesed by any unknown units, even though I didn't change passwords untill just a few days ago.

The only alarming or suspicious thing I noticed during all this time is how ESET was broken in the beggining. Although since it was so easy for the repair tool to fix it, I'm guessing the damage was probably caused by my overall negligence and ignorance before hand, and not by malware. Is it possible that it was damaged because of me pressing the manual off-button one too many times or something similar?

What's your assessment of the situation/next step?

Thank you for your patience! :)

Turning off your computer with the manual shutdown off-button once or twice usually does not cause trouble. However, doing this repeatedly is not good for your computer because Windows goes through a set of important steps during its normal shutdown that are not completed when pressing the manual off-button.

You're computer looks clean, but let's double check with Adwcleaner...

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait a bit.
  • Click on I agree button.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Regards,
Jason

Seems like the scan only found a folder, and I think it's the same location as one of the items we just quarantined in the emnisoft scan. I'll leave everything as it is for now since you didn't give me any more instructions, let me know if I should clean it.

Here's the log:

Yeah, that's the same folder.

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again. Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait a bit.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin to scan your computer like it did before.
  • After the scan has finished...
  • This time click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

Clean Upcleanupm.PNG

Now we remove all the tools we used (including their logs and quarantine folders), restore your settings and delete old and possibly infected system restore points:

  • You can uninstall programs that you had to install (e.g. ESET Onlinescanner) in the control panel if you so wish.
  • Download delfix.pngDelFix (by Xplode) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all running programs and start delfix.exe.
    • Make sure that all available options are checked.
    • Click on Run
    • DelFix should remove all our tools and delete itself afterwards. I don't need the log file.
  • If there is still something left you can delete it manually.

Tips

I recommend to read and follow advice in the "16 simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet" [ Link ] by Lawrence Abrams.

So I guess that's it then? :) All signs point towards my computer being clean? (I know you can never be 100%, so I'll probably run a few scans with the programs I decide to keep in a few weeks from now either way, since patience seemed to pay off in finding the ScrInject.b gen thing).

I'll begin with the clean up procces now. Here's the log for adwcleaner:

Thank you so much for your all the help! :)

Now I feel kinda bad for taking your time when I didn't actually have any real malware left on my computer at all... I've been reading about many people on this forum who are not as lucky as I am.

Still it's a huge relief to know that the "HTML/ScrInject.B.Gen virus" is not a very serious infection, and that it's really gone now. The reason it made me nervous was because pretty much the only specific information I found out about it from googling the name, came from sites that I realised were just scams trying to trick you into downloading rouge anti-malware programs (many sites said that this was a backdoor trojan, and very dangerous). Most of them recomended SpyHunter which I actually considered downloading for a while, and apparently it would have been a real hell to get rid off. Fortunately I came here instead!

Even though all this has been very stressful, the positive side of it is how much I've actually learned about computer security. I will definitely check out those tips you reccomended me and will use this site as a way to learn even more.

Again, I can't tell you how much I appriciate your help. What you're all doing here is truly amazing!
