move data from one pc to another, xp to w7

boss informed me that with the death of support for xp, or so we're told, i need to get all of my data off this xp box and move it to an w7 box.  what exactly should i move over, and what, how, can i bring programs over?

You cannot move programs...they must be reinstalled.  The complexity of installing a program...with it's variety of files and registry items...dictates this.

 

Data files can be moved in the normal manner...from one storage medium to another...either by copy-paste or cut-and-paste.

 

Obvious files for continuity include address books, contacts, email, and bookmarks/favorites...along with key data files.

thank you, hamluis.  tell me, is it possible to copy my user acct over to an external hard drive, and d/l it to the new pc?  will this bring over all the files?  i can then reinstall the programs i need after.

Have you looked at the contents of your account under Doc/Settings?  I think one look will show you what would be useful and what won't be useful, if you copy the Docs/Settings.

 

Most of us have data files which are valuable...which will not be any of the Docs/Settings folders at all.
