Has anyone fixed this themselves by doing a DFU Restore - Device Firmware Update to reload the software and the firmware?

Was it straightforward?

Any tips on getting it right first time?

Well, you can try to do a restore using DFU mode

But, if your iphone is damaged, then it might not work (it could be that the battery is having an issue, if it is then you can get it replaced for free for the first year with Apple One Year Limited Warranty, or if you have AppleCare warranty but before you do that, make a backup as your device might be replaced with a new one

You can check your warranty by entering your serial number of your iPhone on this apple support area
