I am getting the following message when I turn on a Dell Precision 360 running XP Pro

SATA Primary drive 0 not found
SATA Secondary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 0 not found
Primary drive 1 not found
Secondary drive 1 not found
Alert! Cover was previously removed.

strike F12 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

Someone said the computer needed a new hard drive and an OS. My question is what is the best way to proceed. Mostly interested if I can fix this without buying any hardware.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Louis:

Yes, I chose "IDE Drive Diagnostics" from the "Boot Device Menu" and in a few seconds it said "No Hard Drives installed, press any key to continue"

It also said  this:

Primary SATA

Drive 0:  No Device

Secondary SATA

Drive 0: No device

Primary IDE

Drive 0: No device

Drive 1: No device

Secondary IDE

Drive 0: Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-352F -Diagnostics not supported

Drive 1: No device

If there is no hard drive, can you tell me a way to find out exactly what kind of hard drive I need to replace it.  As I said it is a Dell Precision 360.  I would want the cheapest HD that would work.

Thank-you

Unplug the power cord and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Remove the side panel and touch some bare metal of the case. Look for your hard drive(s). Make sure the power and data cables are securely attached.

Here is a manual for your Dell. Read through it first. If you are not comfortable removing the side panel then have someone else help you.

John:

I opened the case and the HD was not connected to the Power Supply.  Your posts were very helpful.
