Hi

Just an hour ago my pop received an email from MyPCBackup saying they are going to lock all my Grandfathers files! I am not in a very good position today, but what will happen if ransomware struck their computer?

Your Grandfather should not click on anything in that email. It is most likely just spam.

Have him to check in installed program list for MyPCBackup or any other listing for MyPC....it is all junk ware and adware intensive....Uninstall if found.

Send the email to the Junk or Spam folder....that may automatically block anyother attempts by MyPC to send more spam....depending on his email provider.

If possible...have him to copy JUST the body of the email to you and you can post it in your next reply.

Ok I got the body of the text in the email here's what it says:

"If you don't pay within the next 24hrs your files will be locked!" I am beginning to suspect that it's the Cryptowall Infection.

I don't think so. It was an email from MyPC Backup...right?

Did he ever use the online MyPC Backup? If so, he may have used the trial backup or he may have prepaid for the the use of their cloud storage. They have a variety of payment plans.

Did he check for My PC Backup in his list of installed programs? It installs a toolbar, too.

What security programs does he have installed? Any chance he has MalwareBytes Antimalware free or the paid version?

Do you have physical access or remote access to the computer?

Sorry for the long response, yes he actually did have MyPCBackup Installed so he removed it. The antivirus programs he has are Avast Premier (Paid) and the full version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I also have physical access to the computer having removed all the junk from the computer I also calculated how many infections he had and the total is around 900 infections, but all have been removed now, but I think there are still traces of it.

If he actually used it to backup online....then that is what the email was referring to. But trojan downloaders and free programs can and do install that crapware.

Check the Browser(s) he is using for add-ons that mention MyPC or any toolbars and delete them. You can use CCleaner Tools to check what is starting up in

his Windows, Browsers and Scheduled Tasks.

Use these programs to cleanup the computer.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • Eset will not leave a report if no malicious items were found and removed.

Good....I visited Streaky Bay online....my kind of place to visit...how's the fishing? Murphy's Haystacks...a curiously impressive natural creation...and I didn't see any graffiti...
