IBM Says It's Lucky to Get 10% to 20% Yields on Cell Processor

Cell processor reliability details may surprise you

As Sony's PlayStation 3 console nears its official release, more focus has turned to the technical wizardry that lays inside the actual machine. The Cell processor, developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, has gained a great deal of attention over the last year. In an interview with Electronic News however, IBM vice president of Semiconductor and Technology Services Tom Reeves says that his company is lucky if it can get 10% to 20% yields on the Cell processor.

cost of brand new technologies I guess. I'm still excited for it though (as with all next-gen gaming but PS3 a bit more)

does that mean that there is a higher potential for the PS3 to die because of processor failure too?

CPU fails you got 3 companies trying to fix it, sounds like a mess, especially if there is a early recall.

Yup, sounds like something you might want an extended warranty on.

Poor PS3 gamers, note only will you have to pay sony $600 for the PS3 but you'll have to do it over and over again.

A company, Mercury Computer Systems, has released a PCIe add-on card for Workstation PCs which adds a Cell processor to the computer (Press Release). Considering this card is almost nothing but the same Cell processor the PS3 has but costs $7000 makes you wonder how much Sony is loosing on the PS3. Sure there is probably a price premium for it being new tech and all, but still.

Speaking of PS3, apparently, this link contains an article and pictures taken of a replica PS3. If these are true to what the final PS3 is going to be like (why shouldn't they?) then its looking good.
