Hello I hope I am on the right forum.

I am wanting to upgrade my cpu. I tried to unlock it with no luck so think it is best to change it. I am having trouble finding out what will work for my motherboard and would be the best for me.    I do not game but I do work with graphics and video.

Mother board Gigabyte Model    GA-880GM-UD2H

CPU  AMD Sempron 140 2.70ghz  Socket AM3

Win 7 ultimate 64

I do not want to over do it and not have enough cooling or spend too much money.

Does any body have some ideas

Thanks in advance

Calvin

Here is the support list for your motherboard.  Note it might vary depending on hardware revision (this is Rev. 1.0, but the board was revised several times).

http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3415  Some need newer BIOS's to be installed.

Note these are mostly older CPU's now, not in production, so availability may be limited.  Dealers on Ebay may be worth looking at.  A Phenom II X4 would be a useful upgrade compared to the single core processor you're running now, and there should be loads of them about.

One more thing.

I found a good deal on a HDZ955FBGIBOX

The compatibility lists I checked say it wants F2 bios. My board is F7.

My question is are the f# in sequence by updates? Like a version of a program.

In the list you sent it says "since BIOS version "

So does this mean if my board is F7 and the cpu is F2 Iam good to go?

Warm regards from Oaxaca

Calvin

That is correct, the BIOS is a version number.  F7 is newer than F2, and "since BIOS version" means the oldest version to support the processor.

So, yes you are good to go :)

One thought.  I should mention, the X4's do create more heat than the Sempron's.  Originally they were supplied in a box with their own heat pipe equipped heatsink designed to handle the higher heat output of the chip (link for info purposes only, I think the seller is charging a lot there).  Sometimes the used parts are supplied as the CPU only.  If a heatsink is not included in the deal, you may need to get a new one to be safe (I think the Sempron heat sink is a lower specification item).  If you need any recommendation for a replacement heatsink, let me know.

That was quick :)  Glad it's working well!  You should see the difference straight away, and any multi-threaded apps (for example most video editors/encoders) should see a major improvement.  Hope the upgrade was easy and trouble free?

No you don't have to close threads, I think they get locked some time later.
