Dear BleepingComputer folk,

My laptop is running Firefox 40.0.3 under Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

The Problem

Two nights ago my browser (then Firefox 40.0.2) started opening some webpages extremely slowly, simply refusing to open others and producing a "This document has been moved here" message for others (see below screenshot - the link would appear to go to whatever I searched for, but I never clicked it).

These various problems were affecting familiar websites that I have bookmarked and regularly open, such as Facebook.  This seemed to be in some way related to the cache, as it was not affecting new URLs that I had not visited previously during that browsing session.

SCREENSHOT #1 - result of attempt to visit https://mail.riseup.net via browser bookmark:

Spoiler

In addition, when using Google Toolbar (but not https://www.google.co.uk/ , which appeared fully functional) to search for anything I would receive the same: "This document has been moved here", but with an additional "302 Moved" message.

SCREENSHOT #2 - result of attempt to search for http://www.facebook.com/ via Google Toolbar:

Spoiler

Attempting to access attachments in gmail also produced a similar message (I don't have a screenshot of this, but I believe the message there again differed slightly, saying that the document was "temporarily" moved).  This is what I encountered first, and unfortunately I did click one of the offered links.  Nothing appeared to happen.

Attempts to resolve

I scanned with AVG Free, Malwarebytes Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free, and none found anything.  In the process I reset the computer and the problem appeared to be resolved.  But today it has returned, just as before.  It appears to be intermittent in its effects, but I suspect a malware infection.  I also notice that our internet access here at home seems to slow for all four computers on the network when this problem is active.

The only possible malware source that I can think of is that I had that day downloaded 7+ Taskbar Tweaker from this link (which I believe to be the website of the creator).  I did google it beforehand and all the comments seemed to be positive with no mention of malware, but that is the only possibility I have managed to come up with.

My problem appears to be similar to the problem this bleepingcomputer poster had, so in case helpful I have run MiniToolBox as they were initially advised to do, and posted the result under the spoiler here.

Many thanks for any assistance you can offer.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Thanks Broni.  Find the new set of logs below.  I will leave the analysis to you, but it looks as though perhaps the Junkware Removal Tool caught something in Firefox?

I should also mention that the first time I clinked your link to download AdwCleaner, I was presented with the below screen.  I notice now that if I clink that link directly I again receive the below screen.  But if I click it a second time I get only about:blank.  If I click a third time I again receive the below screen.  And if I keep clicking, the two consistently alternate in that manner.  But when I right-click and open in a new tab, I always reach the intended download screen.

I'm not sure what that means, but it might be helpful info.  In case relevant, my Firefox is running the addons: Adblock Plus, Ghostery, HTTPS-Everywhere and Noscript (although I guess you might have already noticed that from my screenshots).

The requested logs follow below the screenshot.

Thanks Broni.  The first thing that I noticed after our malware scans was that my Firefox Add-on "Video DownloadHelper" had disappeared.  Does that mean that it may be connected with some form of malware?  I had thought it trustworthy because I sourced it through https://addons.mozilla.org/, but perhaps that is not reliable?  Any advice welcome.  I have not reinstalled this add-on, but it would be helpful to know whether I can safely do so, or whether there is a safer alternative to it.

Regarding whether the original issue was resolved, I wasn't sure until now, as it's intermittent in its effects, but sure enough this morning the same problems presented.  Again the form was slightly different, as per this screenshot resulting from an attempt to visit hotmail via a regularly-used browser bookmark:

Spoiler

As such I have just taken your advice and reinstalled Firefox (I do not have Chrome on my system, though Internet Explorer is there, if almost never used).  The "document/object moved" aspect of the problem is not manifesting now, but I will let you know if it returns over the coming days.

As mentioned in my OP, since the original problem emerged our household's fibre internet connection has been slow and intermittent.  This has not abated at any point and continues now.  However, perhaps this is a coincidence.  It seems unlikely, but I will nonetheless contact our ISP to see whether there are any problems at their end, and let you know their reply.

Thanks again, hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this soon,

Shaun

Gah, the problem is manifesting again, despite the re-installation of Firefox.  What next?

Thanks,
Shaun

I don't see any of our tools removing Video DownloadHelper.

It's safe addon so you can reinstall it.

For now...

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).

OK, I didn't see your last reply.

That "Object moved to HERE" message happens on some specific pages?

Pages you have bookmarked?

Ok, let me attempt to summarise everything.

Well, there are two problems now:

1) This issue of the "object/document moved HERE" messages.  This is intermittent and is not occurring right now.  But when it was earlier, I tested it a little, and it does at least seem to be consistent in its symptoms.

As in my OP, if I attempt to visit https://mail.riseup.net via my browser bookmark (on the Firefox browser toolbar) I get this screenshot:

If I attempt to visit hotmail (https://dub126.mail.live.com/default.aspx?id=64855) via another browser bookmark (also on the same Firefox browser toolbar) I get this different screenshot:

Spoiler

Some of the other browser bookmark toolbar buttons give similar screenshots, others work normally (though very slowly, as with everything else online these past few days), some give "this page cannot be accessed" type messages, and hitting some of the buttons simply does nothing (Firefox remains on the same page, as if I had not clicked the button at all).

If I use Google Toolbar to search for anything I get this screenshot, again slightly different:

Spoiler

And attempting to open attachments in gmail led to yet another variant on the same message (it was something like "This document has temporarily moved HERE"), which I don't have a screenshot of.

As mentioned, the problem also affects some links in webpages, such as the link you posted above to download AdwCleaner.  When clicking it for the first time I was presented with the below screen.  But if I clicked it a second time I got only "about:blank".  If I clicked a third time I again received the below screen.  And if I kept clicking, the two consistently alternate in that manner, with the below screenshot for odd-numbered clicks, and "about:blank" for even-numbered clicks.  But, weirdly, if I instead use right-click and "open in a new tab", all links, including that one, work fine (if slowly).

Spoiler

As I said, the problem is intermittent - but when it is active, all of the above occur, and when it is not, none of them do.  It all seems very strange, but then I guess problems generally do until we solve them...

2) Our internet connection is now slow and intermittent *all the time*, and this started at the same time as the first manifestation of the above problem, although this could be a coincidence.  I haven't yet had a reply from our ISP as to whether they can detect any problem that could be causing this.

What next?  I haven't yet taken any of the actions in your second-most-recent post, as it seems that they are only for when the system is clean.

Thanks

Your slow internet may be causing your issue as explained here: http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E302.html'

The 302 response from the Web server should always include an alternative URL to which redirection should occur. If it does, a Web browser will immediately retry the alternative URL. So you never actually see a 302 error in a Web browser

Since your connection is slow you may actually see that error which would be invisible with fast connection.

You definitely have to contact your ISP and see what they say.

Ok, thanks.  I don't fully understand that page that you have linked to, but I will continue pursuing my ISP (now more confident that they won't just put the problem down to malware on my machine), and let you know when I have a response from them.

That said, if it caused by our internet connection, I'm not sure why there would be a consistent difference between clicking on links directly and opening them in a new tab?  But perhaps there is some technical reason for that.

Your time and insight is greatly appreciated, and I will report back soon.

Ok, another eventful few days to report!

I got hold of my ISP, who were uncharacteristically responsive and immediately made some changes at their end which improved the connection.  There were then more problems which I won't bore you with, but these now seem to be resolved and today we have had a consistent fibre connection at over 20MBPS.  Fast enough to serve web pages, I'm sure you'll agree!

The upshot

Our internet connection is now fast enough to continually stream music, so I don't think it is any longer a candidate as the cause of these "document moved HERE" messages.  But we are still receiving them.

I realise now that this problem is not entirely intermittent.  While it only intermittently affects my toolbars (and I haven't yet encountered this aspect of the problem since our internet connection improved), html links that are affected are affected continuously.

A good example is your link above to download AdwCleaner.  As described (and screenshotted) above, alternate left-clicks on it consistently provide different results (but neither gives the desired target page).  Even-numbered clicks give "about:blank", and odd-numbered clicks give the "301 Moved Permanently" screenshot given above.  At no point has this link functioned normally for me.

Clearing the cache does not affect this behaviour, and exactly the same symptoms also apply to a few other html links that I have encountered (e.g. the three given in the profile of this Twitter user).  My best hypothesis about the commonality between the rare links to which this applies is that perhaps they are all multi-stage redirects: I know that twitter uses http://t.co, presumably Google uses something similar, and perhaps your above link did too?.

All such links work fine if, instead of left-clicking,  I right-click them and "open in a new tab", or if I copy them to my bookmarks toolbar and then open them through that.  This must be a telling symptom of something, but it beats me what it is!

The present situation

My system is now usable (the internet connection seems reliable again and the right-click workaround is not difficult), but I am still concerned that these persistent symptoms betray a malware infection of some kind.  Not least because they are happening consistently on my current laptop and my father's desktop, but never on my old laptop (running Windows 8, not 8.1), which is running through the same connection/router.

Whether or not these symptoms are related to the initial cause of our internet connection problems, I can't say.  I've also noticed that RSS feeds are intermittently resetting to 18th August (i.e. only displaying posts up to 18th August, rather than the most recent ones).  This is happening now, but again, I don't know whether it is related.

(ps  I now have a screenshot of the Google version of the "this document has been moved" message, but it's finally clicked in my head that these differences between 301 and 302 messages are probably just the equivalent of different websites' 404 messages.  As such, they tell us little about the cause and I won't bother posting them here, unless you ask for them)
