I want to find out if I can replace the motherboard on this Acer Laptop, it is in my signature. The sound was lost (I think) when someone Installed from a non OEM XP Disk. I have read of others having this issue, for some crazy reason this particular laptop will loose sound permanently if this is done. I already looked into drivers and settings in BIOS and many more things. If I could get a new inexpensive Motherboard that would be really cool. If it will be expensive, I'll opt out. The problem is, I don't know how to be sure of what to order. This is the last XP machine I have and would like to keep it around for a while. Thanks for any help pcpunk

Its a laptop. Can it be done? Yes. Is it worth it? No I think the cost of a new MB and having a tech install is would cost more than a new laptop is worth.

I would install it, if you can imagine that!  If I could get one really cheap (as I expect, or hope) then I would have a go at it.  It is not great without sound.

Wow, that is cheap.  I don't know if I got a 2.0 slot for it though?  I looked but can't tell.  Would rather not carry around a dongle for it but if that is the easy way to go I will do it.  Don't have a clue how this works, or is set up?

How hard could it be to install a Motherboard?  On this laptop probably not easy lol.  I'll have to take a look at some youtube for it.

Oh man, yes please record this if you do it! Will make for some good watching! :P

In all seriousness... if you ever get to a point of replacing the motherboard on a laptop (most laptops anyway) just go buy a new one. Usually the price of a new one just doesn't justify getting it, and then the hassle of actually putting it in!

I just went through the Repair Manual omg!  I knew it would be hard, that is part of the challenge for me.  But nowhere to be found.  I thought they would be giving those things away lol.  They probably threw thousands of these, new, in the trash years ago.

Good night

You know this is not a bad deal.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-X201-Laptop-i5-560M-4G-160G-WIFI-12-1-Win-7-Pro-/171853658821?hash=item280346bac5

And you could upgrade it to Windows 10. And it would make a great Linux box.

That isn't a bad deal at all! Thinkpads are some solid machines (really the entire Lenovo line is pretty good, my IdeaPad runs great).

So I take it you guys are against doing this Hahahahahabahwaha!

I considered this because I thought I would be able to find one dirt cheap, and to learn what is possible.  Yes I need a new pc/Modern pc.  But I got three free laptops, and they work well enough until I come into some money.

I get deals at Dell through work.  I was looking at their Ubuntu pc's for 330.00 us with a measly intel cpu, one above the M.  I'll go take another look and copy the info, but it don't seem that we get much of  a deal.

@NickAu1, I will get another HP bro! I love them.  I'm sure some of the upper end Dells and such are good also.  The XPS looks awesome, but I would love to go with something like what you got there a G1-2

No, if you want to do it go right ahead and do it! I wouldn't recommend spending a ton of money on the board though. I would only do it if I could find one for a relatively cheap price.
