Started out not being able to get on internet and otherwise OK. Kept jacking around with it until now it won't even start. On startup just gets to a point where it finds problem and shuts down to prevent damage. I put the harddrive in another computer and can access all files but I don't know what I'm looking at.

Thanx

If this is an XP system, you can backup your data by slaving it to another computer.

But be careful as XP doesn't store things as nicely as later OS's.

Most of the XP data will be in the Documents and Settings folder - but many programs store their data elsewhere.

What I'll need from the hard drive is the files in the C:\Windows\Minidump directory.  Just zip them up and upload them with your next post.

If unable to zip them there, copy them to your Desktop and zip them up there.  These are the reports that are generated when the system gives you the "shut down to prevent damage" message

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

What I now have is a windows 7 computer with the XP hard drive that has the problem also in it. These are the Minidump files that you said to copy and send. Attached File  New Compressed (zipped) Folder.zip   161.01KB   2 downloads. Now all that I can do is wait to hear if I did this right.

Thanks

I haven't analyzed XP memory dumps in quite a while - but, in general. they are much more straight-forward that Vista and later dumps.

While you have the hard drive slaved to another computer, please run diagnostics on it:  http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

Out of 5 memory dumps there were 4 different BSOD  (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes.  The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case.  Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).

Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

The first 3 (hard drive, memory, and malware) are available in bootable form - so you don't have to get into Windows to run them.

I've got several suggestions about what to try once you get back into Windows.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a lot in the memory dumps that you'll be able to work on outside of Windows.

As such, it's likely that this is a hardware problem.  If the hardware diagnostics don't find anything, then try this procedure to see if you can isolate the faulty component(s):  http://www.carrona.org/strpdown.html

Good luck!

ususma:

Put hard drive back in the computer and ran Sea tools long test and got good result. Took 3 hours.  It started back up ok and got to the desktop and told me in Spanish that the Bing Desktop files had been damaged. Uninstalled Bing Desktop. Restarted. Message returned, but icons are working. A little slow. I put the XD cd in and it loaded up but I then quit until I hear from you.

Have you done the hardware diagnostics?  If not, please do them first.

Then, if still having problems, let's give a Repair Install of XP a try:  http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

It's now booting to the desktop and some icons work and the Firefox icon gets me on the internet. If I want to back it up before I keep going until I loose it; can I put another hard drive in the machine and copy to it then use the XP disk to start over? what I have in mind is that this one that is having problems is updated and is ver. 3. If I copy the whole disk I wind up with the same problem.

Backup your Documents and Settings folder - along with any other locations that programs store your data in.

Then reinstall XP clean:  http://www.carrona.org/canned.html#clean

While the procedure is for Vista/7 - XP is similar enough that it should work well with minor modifications.

You can still try a repair install first - if it doesn't work, then you can try the clean install.

Good luck!
