Can't you use an Android OS tablet without a Google Gmail account?

I have been wondering about Androids "oneness" (meaning both are as one) with Google Gmail. When someone first buys a tablet with Android OS, don't you have to have a Google Gmail account in order to even use the tablet in the first place? Isn't there a way to use the tablet without having a Google Gmail account?

Thank you

I believe you only need a Google Account if you use any Google specific services. If you need an account you can create a junk Gmail account and not give your personal info. Make something up.

You will not be able to update the OS, or any system applications, or preloaded apps through Google Play without a gmail account. But as suggested make up a 'junk' account specifically for that purpose.

To have a Google account, it is safer. Just like, Lumia Phone requires a Microsoft account. It can remember your settings and data.
