I need a software that I can use to scan... less than reputable files from the web. What is the best software to do that? Any good free or open source software?

Avast! is very good free software that will tell you before you even run the program or file if it has a virus.

You can see this post for a list of online file scanning services. They check the file against multiple AV and AM engines currently available.
