Hey guys,

My sister gave me her laptop the other day to work on. It is currently bootlooping when powering on with a quick flash of a bsod. The laptop is currently running Windows 7 Ultimate. What would be the best way to go about finding out the BSOD error message to continue on with trouble shooting? Should I try safe mode? Boot from a Linux OS like Knoppix, Ubuntu Live, or even a utility disc like Hirens?

As always I appreciate the support.

Try Safe Mode first.  If you can get in, post back and we'll give some suggestions from there.

You can also try Startup Repair from a W7 repair disk or installation disk.

Beyond that, try these free, bootable diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

Thanks usasma. The system began to boot into safe mode and then just bootlooped again. I was however, able to disable the reboot on system failure and discovered the BSOD was from an "unmountable boot device" which points me to the hard drive. My sister was hoping to purchase a new computer regardless but I already knew if this repair needed hardware replacement she would just want to junk it. The only option I can tell from here would be to try a system repair using a Windows disk or find a way to get a command shell and run a chkdisk to verify if the hard drive is indeed dead.

One of the bootable diagnostics I suggested is a hard drive diagnostic.

Try that.

CHKDSK only tests the file system on the hard drive.  It can report the test as good (passing) even if the hard drive is dying.

Cost to repair is a hard drive (about $50 US) and a set of recovery disks (price depends on the system manufacturer).
