Hi,

I am looking for some assistance with a very frustrating issue I keep on having. I am having problems with system restore. I have a Dell XPS with a 250 GB OS SSD drive and a 2 tb storage drive. When I purchased the computer, Dell in its infinite wisdom decided to place the OS on the HDD. I used Samsung's migration tool to transfer the OS to the SSD.

I recently wanted to upgrade my 250 gb SSD to another 500 gb SSD and have tried both the Samsung migration tool and macrium with no success. I repeatedly get a clone failure.

With Macrium the clone failure is always accompanied by a VSS error in the windows log. My shadow storage is 30 GB which should suffice. It also seems like on reboot I lose all my system restore points. In the log I also see volsnap errors. I have done chkdsk /f as well as chkdsk /r. The /r never seems to complete and stalls for days.

I am really frustrated and am looking for some help. macrium suggested I clone my drive using an image and windows PE but my concern is that if I clone this drive, won't my errors be transferred as well? Please help, Thanks.

If the errors are software they would be cloned, if they are hardware the clone should be clean. I would try to clone it.

For the future, run this batch script to obtain info on your current system restore setup and restore points -

http://www.sysnative.com/apps/vss.bat

Download it to Desktop or Documents; RIGHT-click on it, select "Run as Administrator"

A Notepad will open upon completion.

Macrium Reflect is a much better program.

Thanks all for the replies. I will definitely run the script.

However, is there any advice to stop all the issues I am having. I would like to salvage the system if possible. I get repeated vlosnap and VSS errors and repeated freezing. Thanks.

Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

cmd will appear above the search box, right click on it and select Run as administrator from the menu that opens.  This will open the Elevated Command Prompt.

Copy and paste the command below in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.

vssadmin list writers >r&& sc qc vss >>r&& sc queryex vss >>r &&notepad r

A notepad file labeled R will open after the command has run.  Please copy and paste this in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

This is the other script I ran. As you can see once again the shadow storage for the C: drive shows 0 for allocated and 0 for actual even though I have 30 GB set aside.

Any update on this? I posted what was requested.

At this point my computer is pretty much unusable with frequent freezing that requires a reboot. Scannow does not find anything. When I run chkdsk, it deletes orphan files but after a few minutes freezes again.

thanks.
