Somehow, toolbar by myway replaced my usual thumbnails toolbar under my google search bar. In the process of trying to get rid of it, I followed a procedure by going to my Google settings and deleted the Extension controlled by myway. In doing that, am I rid of the problem or is it a superficial removal?

That depends. You did remove toolbar component correctly but there might still be something left, for example program that installed toolbar in first place.

I suggest running scanner like AdwCleaner. Here is link to instructions:
