"ntoskrnl.exe" causing multiple BSODs

Hello.

 

I'm running Windows 10, and before that had been running 8.1. In both OS versions, I have gotten mutilple BSODs, specifically: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, BAD_POOL_HEADER, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, and MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.

 

BlueScreenView says a file named "ntoskrnl.exe" is to blame every time.

 

I ran Memtest on 8.1 and got no errors. I'm afraid of running Driver Verifier because if I get locked out of my computer because of a VERIFIER_ENABLED BSOD, I'm not sure how I would get back in (I can't boot to safe mode using F8).

 

Any help getting rid of these blue screens would be very much appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

In most cases, the reason that you can't upload the dump files is that they haven't been zipped up.  The forums only allow certain kinds of files to be uploaded, and .zip is the one that's used the most by us.

 

There's a different way to get to Safe Mode in Win8/10.  But don't worry about it now - we'll discuss it if it's needed.

Out of 8 memory dumps there were 5 different BSOD  (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes.  The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case.  Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).

Your UEFI/BIOS (version F1) dates from 2014.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

MalwareBytes may be conflicting with your Avast.  Please uninstall it for now (for testing purposes)

Should you decide to reinstall it, DO NOT consent to the trial of the Pro version - as that's the component that starts with Windows and may be conflicting.

 

Logitech drivers date from 2012 and may not be compatible w/Win10.  Please uninstall the Logitech device and its software.  Then, if you want to continue using it, download and install the latest, Win10 compatible software from Logitech.

My version of the UEFI/BIOS from 2014 is the only version Gigabyte has released.
 
After completing the perfmon and SysnativeFileCollectionApp, I uninstalled Malwarebytes and the old Logitech driver and replaced the Logitech driver with this one from their website.
 
I'm not overclocking, and Windows Update is all up to date.
 
I'll go and buy a can of air to clean out the tower and get started on the hardware diagnostics in the meantime.

This device has problems in Device Manager:

 

SM Bus Controller    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C22&SUBSYS_50011458&REV_05\3&11583659&0&FB    The drivers for this device are not installed.

This is likely to be a missing device from your chipset drivers.

Double check Windows Update to make sure that there isn't a driver available there.

If not, then download and install the latest version from the Gigabyte website (run it in compatibility mode if there aren't any for Win10)

Or you can search http://downloadcenter.intel.com for Win10 Series 8 chipset drivers and install them.

 

Please remove Rainmeter.  This is just a hunch, so feel free to reinstall the latest, Win10 compatible version AFTER the system has been stabilized.

I installed the chipset drivers, and sure enough, the SM Bus error went away from Device Manager. I hope this solves the problem. Is there any way you recommend testing the system to make sure that it's stable and good to go for future use?

In general, wait a week and see if there are any problems.  If not, then it's probably fixed

Then wait another week for problems.  If none appear, then it's likely fixed.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but after 8 days blue-screen-free, I started having the same blue screens again.

 

I've been enjoying the last few weeks of break before I move back to school by playing some video games. Everything was going fine, until I got a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT two days ago, and thought I'd give it a day or two to see if it was just a one time thing. Unfortunately, I got SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION the next day, and today I've had three: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, and another MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. I think it's safe to say that reinstalling the chipset driver didn't solve the root of the problem, even though it did keep the system running smoothly for about a week.

 

The .dmp files from the latest BSODs are attached to this post.

Hi, most of your bluescreen indicates 2 or more as memory corruption or a bad memory module is in the mix. Either reseat the memory firmly, clean the slots or overall, use one and re run memtest or alternately and run windows mode then check the difference. This is assuming that all drivers are addressed in your previous posts.

Just my 2¢, but I tend to agree with jhayz

 

Out of 5 memory dumps there were 4 different BSOD  (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes.  The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case.  Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).

Finally got around to running Memtest86.

 

Four passes on the first stick showed nothing, but the second gave one error. Since I was using the free version, it wouldn't let me save a report file, so I copied the summary at the end of the test:

In general the solution is to replace the faulty item - notice that I did NOT say the RAM.

I presume that there are only 2 sticks and 2 slots.

As you've found one good stick and one bad stick - take the good stick and test it in the slot that the bad stick is in.

If it tests good in that slot also - then you know that the 2nd stick is bad (and that the slot isn't bad).

 

If that proves it, then replace the bad stick.

You presume correctly, there are 2 sticks and 2 slots.

 

I tested both sticks in the same slot yesterday, but just for good measure I'll put the good stick in that slot and test it tonight overnight, and start looking for replacement hardware accordingly. Thanks for your help again.
