hi All,

I am using an old laptop purchased in Jan 2010 with Windows 7 home basic installed on it. It was functioning properly about 2 months back and i then noticed that the browser started taking more time to load. Later the browser started hanging intermittently and now even my usual routine items take time to respond and function (opening folders/playing videos etc)

my antivirus is a legal copy and its up to date. can anyone please help me in digging through the issue? This may be happening because my laptop is just old enough but I dont want to conclude that without enough debugging.

thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

regards,

Vishal

- Free disk space is too low (7%)

- Harddisk is (in the 1st stages of) failing.

Conclusion: Backup everything and replace the harddisk with a new one (of - at least - say 400 GB). And for Win 7 I would recommend to increase the memory to - at least - 4 GB. Because Chrome needs LOTS of memory and enough free diskspace.

My Windows 7 machine ran on 3GB of RAM and was very acceptable.

If you feel that Chrome is using too much resources switch to Firefox.

If you have not already done so, you need to backup all of your important data to removable media, like an external hdd, Flash dive/s, DVDs, etc.

In the future you need to be aware that a hdd of this size need to have at least 15% free space.  This is especially true if you are running as little as 3GB of RAM.  With this little amount of RAM you find the computer using the hdd's virtual memory.  If you don't have enough free space this will affect availability of virtual memory.

Thank you dc3 and Willy22 for your interest in my post and responding to my query. Does this mean that if I increase the memory and back up all my data to an external hard disk; I stand a better chance of saving my laptop and increase its life? All the data on my laptop is kind of dormant (images - 15 GB, Movies - 10 GB, Songs - 10 GB etc)

Will an upgrade like this make more sense or shall I just cancel all these plans and go for a new laptop instead? My usage is very limited (thanks to smartphone usage) so I do not want to invest in a brand new laptop which is going to cost me $500+

thank you again.

Based on what you told in the previous post (you  use your laptop not that often):

- Backup your files & replace the faulty harddisk with a larger one (~ 500 GB). That's priority #1. That's also a GOOD time to see if you REALLY want to keep all those videos, photos, etc. Or move the files you rarely use/open to another (backup-)drive.

- In your case increasing the memory is less important, but memory today is (relatively) cheap. If after replacing the harddisk, your system is still slow then I certainly would consider increasing the memory.

Backing up your data to removable media is something which you should do so that if the hdd fails you will not lose this data.  In your case, you have a current pending sector count of 11, and a uncorrectable sector count of the same.  This is indicative of a failing hdd.  If you replace the hdd and reinstall the operating system this computer could last for a couple more years.  Then again, it's old enough that leaking electrolytic caps could become a problem for the motherboard.  Then again, they could be just fine.

You can purchase a 500GB hdd for about $45. at Newegg.

Hard drives are dirt cheap these days...I just bought a 3TB drive for $70 at Amazon.

Even though you may not need that much space...it seems foolish to me to buy a smaller hard drive at any price close $70 or so.

Hi Louis,

thank you for your suggestion. Shall I buy an external hard drive and put all my stuff in it thereby freeing the space on my laptop OR replace my existing HD and reinstall the OS? I have never installed/reinstalled the OS on a laptop and have no idea how to do it ( had the OS and other essential softwares installed on my laptop when I had bought it).

Sorry if this question sound stupid to you but I have never done this before so dont have much idea. I will prefer not to install everything again but if thats the only option then will go for it.

thank you,

Vishal

Try resetting Chrome back to default after backing up your files. You are going to have to re-install any plug-in(s) you had, after the reset.

"Percentage of memory in use: 73%" and "Total physical RAM: 3032.36 MB" You might want to add more memory, you only got 3GBs of memory. Adding more memory will make your programs and web sites load faster as well. However this not necessary. Just an upgrade. Make sure what your computer can take before buying more memory, you might be at your max (every computer is different).

1.  Shall I buy an external hard drive and put all my stuff in it thereby freeing the space on my laptop OR replace my existing HD and reinstall the OS?

2.  I have never installed/reinstalled the OS on a laptop and have no idea how to do it ( had the OS and other essential softwares installed on my laptop when I had bought it).

1.  You could use an external hdd with the operating system installed on it.  Your BIOS should be new enough that booting from a USB device is listed as one of the boot options.  The problem here is that your portable computer will no longer be so portable.  Another drawback is the fact that unless you purchase an external hdd with its own power supply it will be powered through the USB port.  This means that if you are running on the battery alone it will decrease the length a charge will last.  A internal hdd is the best way to go.  Installing one is very straight forward.  You can watch a video of this being done here.

2.  You will need the installation disc to install Windows 7 on your new hdd.  Dell is pretty good about giving their patrons a free installation and drivers discs.  Just call them and explain that your hdd has failed and that you need the discs to install the operating system on you new hdd.  When you are ready to do the installation, let me know and I will provide you with a good tutorial.

To confirm that your hdd is failing please use Seagate's diagnostic tool SeaTools for Windows.

Please download and run SeatTool for Windows.

When the website opens scroll down till you find the I Accept button and click on it.

If you scroll down below this button you will find instruction for installing this.

Once you install this program you will see an image similar to the one below.

seagate3_zps1fa1f71c.jpg

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for hdds on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB port.

2.  Detected Drives will list the hdd/s found.  Place a check mark in the drive you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

6.  When the scan is complete you will see Test results, post the status.  If it is green it has passed the scan.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

I apologize for not getting back sooner, my wife is ill.

That is what I suspected we would find.  Time for a new HDD/SSD.
