For some weeks I am getting several BSOD, especially when I am running games on my laptop (see below for the specifications).

I tried to update:

video drivers (intel)

audio drivers (realtek)

bios

and any other possible drivers by the Lenovo software but nothing solved the problem.

I tested 3 times my Ram (8 gb) with memtest86, the first 2 times 4 passes, the last one 8 passes: no errors found.

I scanned the pc with sfc / scannow and it found a corrupted file, namely Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB. I fixed it with

DISM, run sfc again and no error found after that.

I scanned the pc with Malwarebytes and no malware has been found (so far).

I scanned the pc with Windows Defender, no virus has been found.

I cleaned the registry with CCleaner.

I ran Driver Verifier several times but except ntosknrl.exe it could not identify any driver. Only once I got hal.dll identified, but I don't know what it is. If you need I can also post the minidump which have been automatically generated (I attached below the SysnativeFileCollectionApp.zip file, could not create the output with Perfmon)

here are the specs of my laptop X1 Carbon Lenovo:

· OS - Windows 8.1
· x64
· What was original installed OS on system? Win 8.1
·  the OS is  an OEM version (came pre-installed on system)
· Age of system (hardware) 1 year and 3 months
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? no

· CPU Intel i7 4600 U , 2.10 Ghz
· Video Card  Intel Hd Graphics Family

· System Manufacturer Lenovo
· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) 20A7

I followed the guide here and I attach below the output by Sysnative BSOD Dump + System File Collection App.

I could not run PERFMON System Health Report:  after I launch it under an elevated admin CMD prompt a window called Resource and Perfomance monitor appear and it says:

Error:
An error occured while attempting to generate the report.
The operator or administrator has refused the request.

I also attach the log files of FRST.

any help is really welcome, I don't know what to do next.... :-(

Nice work!  Just FYI - in general, hal.dll resides between the hardware of a system and the kernel (core) of the operating system acting sort of like a translator between the hardware and Windows.

Most often hal.dll errors are related to compatibility issues or hardware problems (but that's not the only thing - just the most common reason).

Check for a new version of the BIOS/UEFI for your system.  The current version is GRET44WW (1.21 ), and dates from 19/03/2015

Make sure that you also get ALL available Windows Updates.

C: drive has less than 5% free space.  Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance.  Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives.

Comodo is known to have problems like this that don't leave evidence in the memory dumps.

The test here would be to uninstall Comodo and see if that helps.

Be sure to activate the Windows Firewall and an antivirus in order to be protected while testing.

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting.  Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.  i5 and i7 processors can be "auto-overclocked" by using Intel's TurboBoost feature.  If so, it's safe to disregard this caution.

Out of 10 memory dumps there were 8 different BSOD  (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes.  The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case.  Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems (to include the Comodo drivers)
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).

Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

thank you very much for your comprehensive reply.

I recently updated the bios of my laptop from here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-type-20a7-20a8/downloads/DS039782

so I think I have the latest one, right? as you can see from the txt file of this release (the second link) the version is 1.21, the one I have. I upgraded my bios since I started having these issues.

Windows Update is always kept up-to-date.

I don't know what Comodo is! I typed Comodo in the uninstall window of control panel but I found nothing.

I am not overclocking my system. What I don't understand is why my memory seems to be overclocked by the analysis you posted: " Processor may be overclocked!
Expected Frequency:   2100
Actual Frequency:     2694
"

Is this normal? actually also in the Basic informations of my system in Control Panel it is written: Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4600U CPU @ 2.0 Ghz 2.69 Ghz.

for sure It is not my intention to overclock my system!

I tried to uninstall Logitech but I can see that something is still left on my system. How do I safely removed an unwanted driver if I have already uninstalled the relative program? in the meantime I will try to reinstall Logitech from the link you provided me.

I will also scan my hardware with the carrona tools you told me. thanks for now!

by the way I forgot to ask you before: my pagefile.sys and hilberfil.sys are huge, 8 Gb and 3.9 Gb respectively: do I have to keep them that size?

The Software Environment...Program Groups section of the MSINFO32 report shows Comodo.

If it's not listed in Control Panel...Programs and Features, then we'll wait to see if it shows up later on.

If you've uninstalled the relevant program, then the drivers should also be uninstalled.

The way to tell is to wait for the next BSOD

The overclocking is normal, it's controlled by Intel programs on your system.

If you wish to change it's settings, please start another topic in the Windows 8 forums once we're done here (I don't know much about the program that does this)

Hiberfil.sys must be the size of your RAM.  If you disable hibermation, that will make this file go away.  More about this here:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/hiberfil-pagefile-swapfile-sys-windows

Pagefile.sys is normally adusted by Windows.  Here's an article on how to adjust it:  http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts/archive/2013/01/07/how_2d00_to_2d00_change_2d00_the_2d00_size_2d00_of_2d00_virtual_2d00_memory_2d00_pagefile_2d00_sys_2d00_on_2d00_windows_2d00_8_2d00_or_2d00_windows_2d00_server_2d00_2012.aspx

If the system BSOD's again, please zip up and upload the contents of C:\WIndows\Minidump

If you have difficulty zipping it up, copy it to your Desktop and zip it up there.

I now see Comodo where you say, but I have no idea what it is!

do you want me to activate driver verifier before I try to find if the BSOD's appears again or not? does the minidump output change if driver verifier is activated?

No need to use Driver Verifier at this point.

If the BSOD occurs again, then we can try it.

Driver Verifier runs special routines that stress the drivers.
So it'll make the system give a BSOD (which may/may not be different from other minidumps).

The problem here is that you don't want to do it on a system that's not BSOD'ing.  The reason for this is that it can make normally functioning drivers give BSOD's - even if they're not giving you problems normally.

Hi,

I still get BSODs, the latest one a few minutes ago, I attach here the latest ten (or so, those that are currently now in my minidump folder).

We had already looked at all of the uploaded dumps with the exception of 1 (the one dated from 13 Aug)

If you look at the Usual Causes section here:  http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x0000001E

You'll note that there's a lot of hardware considerations here.

Also, you've had a number of differing BSOD's - another symptom of a possible hardware problem

And finally, you're attempts with Driver Verifier showed some involvement with hal.dll - another possibility that hardware is involved
I'd start by suggesting that you run these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Also, while waiting, I'd update your chipset drivers (as that's the one that's blamed in this memory dump).

You can download them from the Lenovo website.

Good luck!

hi, so far I ran:

Intel Processor diagnostic tool 64 bit

that I found here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool-64-bit-

no errors found.

I don't think I need to run another ram diagnostic tool, since I ran memtest for several times (see the first post, if you want I can upload the results I got with memtest).

Since I was there I downloaded also the

Intel SSD Toolbox

but it does not run since I don't have a SSD by Intel, apparently...

I also found some other diagnostic tools on the website by Lenovo here:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-type-20a7-20a8?tabName=Downloads

Among these I ran

Lenovo CPU Test

no errors found.

I also installed

Lenovo Fan Test

but the program says that no Fan is found... is that normal? is it because I have a Laptop-ultrabook? strange because I found it on the page of the programs for my X1 Lenovo.

I could not find a diagnostic tool for my SSD Hd of Liteon on the link you gave me. Which one do you suggest me to use?

I had already updated every possible Intel drivers, since I ran Intel® Driver Update Utility 2.2 which should check for every possible updateable driver. anyway I download and installed again the latest version of Intel chipset drivers from here:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-type-20a7-20a8/downloads/DS039648

Whocrashed told me that

". A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

smb_driver_intel.sys (Synaptics SMBus Driver, Synaptics Incorporated)

how can I safely update this driver? I have unistalled this driver from the Device Manager (and windows replaced it by Thinkpad Ultranav pointing dvice) but I still got some crashes and freezes (no BSOD this time).

Ah I forgot to say that most of the time I got a BSOD and/or a crash, when the system tried to reboot itself, the lights of appeared to blink on and off several times before the system was able to properly boot.

anyway, see the last BSOD I got (zipped otherwise I cannot upload it, is it normal?), this time the culript seems to be Wdfilter.sys

The very (??) last thing I need to check is the graphic card (still by Intel, I wonder if the previous diagnostic tool by Intel also checked the graphic card or if Intel has a dedicated tester for that).

Update: I checked the internal graphic card with Furmark 1.16, I did the GPU stress test full screen, 1600x900.

After a few minutes I got a BSOD, here attached, now the problem is due to fltmgr.sys.

maybe the problem is due to the graphic card? can it be broken?

if so, is it replaceable? the system is unfortunately out of warranty (I did not choose the extension of warranty, shame on me....).

by the way, since yesterday, and before the lasts uploaded BSODs, I have 15 Gb free, so 15% free of my hd.

second update: I ran the Lenovo Bootable Diagnostics here:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/lenovodiagnosticsolutions/tools

from an external usb drive. Absolutely no errors has been found, including the video card (there was a stress test also there) see the logs attached.... so now I wonder if it is possible to run Furmark above outside Window (I sent an email to the programmer).

There must be a conflict in windows which makes my video card not working, I think.

Do you think that the "refresh your pc without affecting your files" functions in win8.1 under the Recovery section can be a solution to my problem?

it is really annoying that in 2015 such problems cannot be identified sooner!

The fan may/may not be a problem - but I doubt it as you haven't mentioned any heat issues.
Is the system feeling too warm?  Also, as it passed the Lenovo diagnostics, I don't see that the fan is a problem.

I suggest Crystal Disk Info for testing SSD's - but it's not really a test.

Still, the tools available for SSD's are limited - so diagnostics rely upon ruling everything else out first :0)

Intel driver tool isn't perfect.  I have seen it miss it's own drivers on many occasions.

WhoCrashed is also not perfect.  While I haven't studied it as much as I have BlueScreenView (by Nir Sofer) - it appears to give similar results.

The problem here is merely that a machine is reading the results - and it can't take into consideration the other things that we see.

For example, if it's the smb_driver_Intel.sys that's to blame, then if you replace it with a good copy - why should it be to blame again?

Secondly, why is it listed as a Synaptics driver?  The primary Synaptics driver for your system is syntp.sys

The description of this driver in your MSINFO32 report has no mention of Synaptics, and (IME) this is a core Intel driver that is a part of your chipset drivers (which I mentioned in my last post).
Out of curiosity, exactly what device did you uninstall (the one that replaced it with the ThinkPad Ultranav pointing device)?

The forums prohibit uploading certain file types.  We use .zip a lot, so it's allowed.  .dmp and .exe are 2 that are commonly not allowed.

Did the BSOD happen while you were running Furmark?  If so, that's likely significant.
Try running it again once or twice - see if it crashes each time that you use it.

If it does, then that's likely the true cause of your BSOD's.

I believe that the graphics card is built into the motherboard - so replacing it would entail replacing the entire motherboard (not a task that I'd care to undertake!).

Different tests will test different components.  I've used Furmark for years to detect problems with video cards and haven't had any significant problems.

I'm not familiar with the Lenovo test, but would think that it would be more accurate on the Lenovo built stuff (like fans and coolers) than it would be on other manufacturer's devices.  Furmark may:

- test different parts of the video card than the Lenovo test

- have been tested on more different systems than just Lenovo

There are 3 different things that cause BSOD's (again, IME):

- 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- hardware problems (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

It will not hurt to Refresh your system - and it may actually help.

Understand that it may remove some of your programs (the most common removal is Office)

But there should be a folder left on your Desktop that tells you what was removed.

You even may end up with doing a Reset.  But be sure to backup your stuff first.

That's the ultimate "test" when we suspect a Windows corruption - and it's usually the last thing we do.

Good luck!

Looking at the latest memory dumps, the oldest driver (2012) seems to belong to a ZTE Wireless Ethernet Adapter

Please uninstall this, physically remove the device from the system and see if that stops the BSOD's

If you wish to continue using this device after the system is stabilized, please download and install a Win8.1 compatible version of the drivers for this device.

I don't exactly remember which driver related to the mouse/pointer I removed, possibly it was something about Logitech....?

I made other tests with Furmark, and now, quite sistematically, while the program is running, I got BSOD's after 2-3 minutes (not immediately, though). See the attached BSOD.

Since the system is out of warranty (shame on me that I decided to not buy the 3 years extension of warranty...!!), I guess it would be stupid to have the motherboard replaced to have a fixed graphic card, isn't it? the cost would be too high... now I have to look for a new computer after 1 year and some months... :-(

I will try first a system refresh, but now I doubt it will help.

for your last suggestion, I found out that the ZTE Wireless Ethernet Adapter was a driver of an external usb drive I normally use to connect to the internet... I have found an updated version of it and installed it (after I removed the previous one).

I refreshed the system, but I still get the BSOD from Furmark.... :-(

If you get BSOD's from Furmark, then it's likely that there's a problem with your video card.B

But, as the errors are repeatedly associated with the chipset, it's also possible that the video card is causing problems for the chipset/motherboard.

These latest memory dumps tend to point at hardware problems (don't forget, that there can be more than one thing causing the BSOD's).

That is different from the previous one's that point at the SMB driver.

Also, the ZTE drivers still date from 2012 - so it's possible that they are causing problems.

To test this out, remove the ZTE software and physically remove the ZTE device from your system.
Then test to see if the BSOD's come back.

As the Furmark BSOD's are different than the usual one's - I'd suggest not running Furmark until you see if removing the ZTE device has stopped those BSOD's.

A replacement motherboard can cost $400 (US) or more to replace.  You may be able to save some money if you purchase it and install it yourself.
