I'm shopping for server hardware. I need to be able to drive 26 x86 Windows 10 guests (at 2gb/guest memory) for an IT training program. We want to virtualize the systems so that different machine states can be created and be quickly switched to. I am currently looking at Xeon dual hexa core platforms. Is this the right direction to go in?

I am not a VM or IT expert but I can't help but respond after seeing your post and doing a lot of reading.  I would guess that the question you need to ask yourself is how many cores you want to assign per virtual machine.  Hopefully an IT expert will come by and be able to answer you better.  From what I've read you can setup around 2 to 3 VM's per core however the processing power does not seem to affect the VM as much as how much memory is available.  (again from what i've recently read about VMs)
