laptop display problem

I have a toshiba satellite c670...6 gigs of ram...i3 processor...running windows 8.1


the display screen is broken but it works with an external monitor...can't afford a new or even used display screen so I was wondering if I were to unplug and take off the laptop screen would i still be able to use the external monitor...fyi...the external monitor is automaticly used when plugged in...
