I have downloaded both the .msi and .exe versions for windows from this site:

http://7-zip.org/

In both cases there are different reason they will not work.

with the first file, Windows said this:

"This package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package."

With the second file, it said "Error"

Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you sure that you went to the current site? I do not see any .msi listed where I just looked.

Download 7 Zip was the site that I came up with and it has the current 2015 version for 64bit at the top.

The link you left had 2010 versions listed which are outdated.

the .msi file was a beta for windows that just came out.

I went to your link and downloaded the file and it ran.  This is a relief because a lot of my downloads are getting the message that they are not win32 applications even though they are.

thanks for your help.

I guess we can call this thread RESOLVED.
