Hi I have a Dell XPS 8000 desktop that has been running fine for a couple years and suddenly started crashing at random.

Hardware:

Stock XPS 8000 MB/Vid/NIC

upgraded ram to 16gb

Software:

Windows 8.1 fully patched full retail version i purchased from amazon.com.  system originally had windows 7 on it, but i've run 8 on it since it came out.

teamviewer

windows defender

plex media server for windows (latest plex pass channel version)

hyper-v windows 2003 server guest

hyper-v management tools

Recent Changes:

added 16gb of crucial ram about 2 months before the crashes started

installed Plex media server days before the crashes started

Attempts to fix:

removed plex

ran several windows 8.1 memory tests with no errors

updated all the drivers i could find new versions for.

full wipe and reinstall of windows from bootable usb - seemed fine at first, then after patches, plex reinstall and driver updates it started acting up again.

Driver verifier enabled for latest 2 minidumps

Eventlog:

nothing during the time of the crash other than the warnings that the system shutdown unclean.

Crash Dumps:

Attached

I'll add info as i get it from the bsod post guide.

Normally i can troubleshoot computer issues easily, but this one is beyond me.  I appreciate any help you can give!!

Thanks!

Too much information too fast!  Luckily I subscribe to this forum, otherwise I'd have assumed that someone else was helping you (due to the number of posts.

The only thing you need to attach now is the minidumps (as long as you don't reinstall the system).

If we ask for a test that you've already run, just let us know that you have (and the results).

Your UEFI/BIOS (version A01) dates from 2009.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

Make sure that you have ALL available Windows Updates.  Let us know of any that you've skipped and any problems that you may have.

Many Windows Update failures listed in the WER section of MSINFO32.

Try this if you're having problems:

There's not many experts at fixing Windows Updates.
I am not one of them.
But the few experts that there are a sorely overworked - so getting a reply will be difficult.
I'll continue to attempt to help here, but please bear with me.

First, please try the Windows Update troubleshooter/fixes listed here:
Windows Update Troubleshooter:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us
Windows Update Troubleshooter KB article:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2714434
Reset Windows Update Components KB article:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

Then, if that doesn't fix the Windows Update problem, please do the following 2 things. (copied from here:  http://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html ):

Run SFCFix

This free tool of neimiro's creation (see above link) is a very good starting point for the diagnosis and repair of all Windows Update and System File Checker corruptions. We therefore need you to run this tool prior to collecting logfiles.

        -  First download and run a copy of the tool from http://www.sysnative.com/niemiro/apps/SFCFix.exe.
        -  Work through any on-screen prompts and then await completion (runtime is approximately 15 minutes).
        -  Once it has finished, if there are any unrepaired corruptions (the tool will notify you if it has succeeded in repairing all corruptions if they're simple in which case we're no longer needed) or unresolved problems with your computer, you need to post us the complete logfile which opens on exit. Simply copy (Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the entire logfile into your new thread (also know as a 'topic'). How to create a new thread is shown later on in this post.

Export CBS folder

        -  On Windows 8, press the Windows key, type This PC, and press Enter.
        -  On Windows Vista/7, click the Start button StartButton_16x16.gif then click Computer.
        -  Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
        -  Find and double click on the Logs folder.
        -  Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
        -  Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
        -  Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
        -  A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

As for the first item (SFCFix), just copy and paste into your post as indicated.
For the second item (CBS log), please zip it up and upload it with your next post.
If it's too big to upload (or you get an error), just upload it to a free file hosting service (such as OneDrive or DropBox).  Ensure that it's shared and then post a link to it here.

You have 3 hard drives.  What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

Out of 11 memory dumps there were 6 different BSOD  (aka STOP or BugCheck) error codes.  The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things (the list is not in any sort of order):
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case.  Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html or http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html ).

Please start with these free hardware diagnostics - they are located here:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks so much for your help usasma,

i've installed the latest bios which is still pretty old, but its A03 and all there is.

I've also run the windows update repair which found 3 issues and fixed them.  I then did a fresh scan for updates which only found a new defender update.

i have 2 updates hidden that i'm not installing, 1st is skype for windows (don't need it) and the 2nd is window 10 update (can't run it on this computer and it seems to have issues with plex)

i'm working on finding updated drivers now and will post back any updates.

Thanks again!

Win8 and above are tightly tied to the BIOS/UEFI.  If the BIOS doesn't adequately support it, then you'll continue to have different problems that seem random.
This isn't an easy thing to diagnose, and usually (at least in my case) it's decided at the time you finally give up on it and decide to get a new system.

But before deciding that we'll have to try and fix all of the other possible problems.

A short story......

I was visiting Microsoft shortly after Win8 was released, and my old (Vista era) Lenovo laptop just wouldn't cooperate with it.

It ran Win7 just fine, but 8 was just too much for it.  It continued to have seemingly random problems with doing anything.

We finally decided to give up and blame it on the BIOS (mine dated from 2008).

Good luck!
